A reimagining of the American Frontier Myth, this contemporary novel is set during the 19th-century Gold Rush in California. It follows two siblings, children of Chinese immigrants as they battle to not only survive in this harsh environment, but to find a home.

Blending Chinese symbolism with a reimagined history of the American West, How Much of These Hills is Gold is a haunting adventure novel with fiercely original language and storytelling. It tackles the broad issues of race and immigration, but is more about the universal ideas of memory, family and the yearning to find a home.

Perhaps one of the most influential philosophical novels of the 20th century, The Plague was written by the French existentialist philosopher Albert Camus. Camus won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957!

In the French Algerian town of Oran, the ordinary lives of Dr. Rieux (a doctor), Jean Tarrou (a young man has just arrived in the town), and Raymond Rambert (a journalist) were all disturbed by an unexpected plague (actually much like COVID!). Locked inside the town due to quarantine, these characters then began their powerless struggle against their destinies.

The plot is absurdist, yet it addresses the essential issues of death, suffering, and individual fate. Truly a masterpiece (and extremely INTOXICATING)!

The book was written by the Russian author and philosopher Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1880.

Set in a 19th-century Russian town, the story revolves around the murder of Fyodor Pavlovich, the father of three sons and a sensualist ignoramus. Each with a different personality, the sons — Dmitri, Ivan, and Alyosha — were drawn into a bitter conflict.

It is a story of love, marriage, hatred, and murder. It is a bitterly realistic reflection upon faith, morality, family, and suffering. This 1000-page novel is worth reading, HONESTLY.

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle

A fairly lengthy novel of almost 700 pages that has taken a lot of effort to read. However i’d recommend it as a must read for those that enjoy novels with philosophical meaning.

It is a bildungsroman novel that follows the life of Toru Okada and his personal development after he quits his job and becomes a househusband that is supported by his wife, Kumiko.

The story explores the themes of free will, desire and irrationality and social alienation. I personally love books that discuss social alienation and irrationality, and this book ingeniously communicates the two in a way that I think is beautiful.

The plot is unique making it highly readable, I’d give it a. 9.5/10 and highly recommend.
