“She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re as sick as she was, it’s alright to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t alright for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did. “ (ch. 11). Mrs. Dubose wanted to die without her weakness. She felt weak because of her morphine addiction that was killing her, and wanted to die without it. She knew she was going to die, but she managed to get past her addiction. She demonstrated that no matter what happens and what the outcome might look like, there is still time to try. This is the true definition of courage.

"She said she was going to leave this world beholden nothing and nobody... But it wasn't easy for her. She said she meant to break herself on it before she died, and that's what she did." Atticus is talking to Jem about how Mrs. Dubose was very dedicated to breaking her morphine addiction before she died. This shows courage because breaking a morphine addiction is a very hard thing to do and Mrs. Dubose showed it. She would get angry and have fits while Jem would read to her. Her making Jem read to her so she couldn't get her morphine dose so she wasn't addicted to morphine when she dies shows Mrs. Dubose's courage.
