I have felt connected and included with the child with special needs. It was wonderful to connect with the person with special needs child.

I have followed the child and the other escort to Ottawa to pick up her brand new wheelchair to be more accessible wherever the child is going and getting braces her for legs for the child. I have learned from the health worker on how to put the child in the wheelchair and that the child needs special kind of shoes to wear to use the braces inside the shoe. I also have learned that children with special needs are more sensitive to loud sounds and they are so kind too and can sense a persons energy when they are around them.

I can say though that teamwork is the key for success especially in these situations although some may only need 1 on 1 support. An elder could offer cultural guidance while health worker could provide a plan to support development and staff could make plans for classroom activities. This kind of teamwork builds stronger connections between the child, staff and family.
