We think he means a nation cannot function with two different sides. Take a piece of wood supported by two smaller pieces. The wood cannot be levelly supported if one of the support systems are vertical and the other horizontal. Like how the North and South were against each other. This created sectionalism as each had their own opposing views on slavery.

We think that it means that if a country is divided by slavery which causes the northern and southern states in a feud then the country is not a country itself .

He meant that we were divided or was sectionalism of the north and the south. It happened back then when slaves came to the United States and then the north didn't beleive in slavery . When Abraham Lincoln was running the south didnt want him to ein the election while the north wanted him to win. When he won, he wanted slavery to end it by limiting how many african americans (what they were called at the time), came to the United States and then the south got mad and the north was happy and they had a civil war and the north won the battle.
