Jonas, the main character in "The Giver," is living in a world of sameness. Living in sameness means there are no animals, colors, choices, weather, or any real feelings. It's what they consider to be perfect. When Jonas is of age to be given a career he is chosen to be a receiver. The receiver is the only person is the community that knows what life is like without sameness. Jonas becomes very close to the old receiver now called the giver. They devise a plan to change the sameness but it would mean Jonas would have to flee the community and never return.

One theme for this book is to stand up for what you believe in even thou it could mean you have to sacrifice something. Another that would fit well is things change and happen for a reason and sometimes it should just stay how it is.

The trees and snow in the other picture could represent the forest towards the end of the book that Jonas had to hid in when he ran away.

Jonas's father is a caretaker, which means his job is to take care of the babies. One day at Jonas's training with the Giver, The giver shows Jonas a video of his father releasing a baby. Until Jonas watched the video he did not know what the true meaning of "being released" was. Jonas then realized releasing meant killing and Jonas could not believe what his father had done and he refused to go home. (lowry146-154)
