In the short story, The War of The Wall, the main character expressed her hatred for the person who is painting the wall. The story explains how the wall was dear to the community and everyone thought that the New Yorker was going to ruin the beauty of it. But at the end, she ended up painting a beautiful recognition of various people. The people realized she was the cousin of a Jimmy Lyons and that she painted out of recognition. I can realte to this as many people have judged others by first appreance, just like the people in the book. I also am guilty of assuming ones personality by their looks, but at the end, they turned out to be amazing people.

These lines of dialogue expand the plot and the understandings of the different types of characters as it shows Mama loosing her temper on the Painter Lady. Once the painter lady set foot into thw town, nobody liked her and everybody believed she was going to destroy the wall. Mama didn't want to assume at the beginning, but after the Painter Lady asked questions about her food, Mama lost her last straw. These lines propel the action as it shows Mama's sudden burst and how she also believed the painter was a stuck up New Yorker. Later in the book, Mama also mentions how people from the North have no manners, and with these quotes, the reader can see how Mama is displeased.

In the sentence above, the author describes the blazing hot weather of Morocco by using personification. I know that this piece of text is personfication as the author describes the sun as fierce, which is a human trait. The author is using a human trait (the word fierce) for an object which is not a human, making this personification. This piece of figuarative language is effective as it can help the reader understand the level of heat during the summer of Morocco. It also can be pictured as the scorching hot sunlight during the heat wave.

Everybody adored Ms Vera Brown and they became better students all because of her. But as soon as they found out she wont be teaching them and that she fell ill, everyone was affected. In the end, the author describes how everyone was sad because of Ms Brown's death and that they couldn't move on from her. I personally can not relate to this short story as I never had a teahcer I adored a lot, and neither did any of my loved ones pass away. I don't know and can not relate to the sorrow the students are currently facing, which makes this short story a window for me.

Clara and Rose were enemies for their whole life, and whenever they see each other, they can't stand still without breaking into a fight. The words, "spark of hate ignited in her eyes" is not its litteral meaning, but the author used this idiom to show the amount of hatred Rose feels for Clara and also to describe how Rose has widened, angry eyes. This piece of figurative language is effective as the reader can understand the relationship between Rose and Clara, but also how Rose has immense hatred for Clara.

The main character explains how Brooke does not have an unbrella or coat/hood to cover her up from getting damp. Instead of the author blantly saying Brooke's hair is a mess, the author uses a methaphor to express the condition of her hair. Instead of helping Brooke up, Raven continues her journey as she has other campers she needs to supervise. But, the author also indirectly shows us how Raven doesn't have a healthy relationship with her half-sister, and this can indicate that she may not want to help Brooke. This piece of dialogue is important to the story as it lets the reader know the relationship between Raven and Brooke and how broken it is.

In this section of dialogue, Raven goes into the woods during a windy night to go find Brooke. Brooke was teased and dared to go find the "monster in woods" by Mercy, and as Raven was her elder sister, she went out to look for her at the cabin in the wood. When Raven found Brooke in the cabin of the Old lady, who was alledgedly the moster in the woods, they exclaim how they were half sisters. The Old Lady realizes how they both considered each other as half-sisters and were not close to each other. The Old Lady explains and makes a reference to half sisters being a half moon; even though by name they are "half", the whole thing is always there. The Lady describes a half moon at night, but the full, whole moon is always in the sky. Just like a moon, half sisters are not really half of each other, the whole part of them is always there. This quote is significant as the bond between Raven and Brooke grew stronger and they realized that they are sisters by heart.

In the statement from the book, The Way You Make Me Feel, I noticed a type of figurative language: personification. Clara was describing her neighborhood and when she came across to of the restaurant workers, she notice one of the workers off their shift and getting into their rusty, old car. Clara describes the car and its bad condition by using the word "groan" to describe the sound the car makes when starts. I know that this is personfication groaning is a human trait, but the author used it to describe the broken down car of the worker. I think the author used this word to add more depth to the story and also to show the working conditions of the restaurant as their worker can't afford a proper car with their pay.

Clara's dad owns a food truck called KoBra in the book, and as a punsihment for Clara's utterly rude disbehavier during Prom, she was forced to help her dad out in the truck. But, what makes it worse is that Clara has to work with her enemy since birth, Rose. As time progresses, Clara sees the importance of money and how hard her dad works to provide food on the tabe. I can not personally relate to this, but I have had a friend where they expressed the same feeling to me, making me connect with the book. My friend was never well off, nor was she poor. She took many things for granted, untill her father passed away and she was on her own. She had to do the housework while her mom was out for a job, and she had to take care of her brother. Her mom thankfully found a job and everything was settled, but my friend explained to me how she realized what she took for granted only after she had to work hard for it. I can make this connection to Clara as she realized the important of family, money, and hard work only after putting in the effort, just like my friend.

Julie expressed how she didn't understand how girls were able to wear heels that were so long and how they are able to balance with a tiny stick. The author uses a similie to express Julie's opinion on heels and how she believed the heel represented a thin, long needle. I knew this was a similie as it used the word "as" and it is comparing both the heel and a needle. This use of figurtaive language not only shows the reader Julie's opinion on heels, but also how she believed the models personailty differs from her.

In the article, "Stop the Sun," the author starts it off by describing Terry's problem which is when his fathers eyes move away. As the author also describes how Terry is stuborn and doesn't give up without knowing the full truth, throughout the story Terry tries to find out the reason and why his parents kept it from him. This helps the reader understand how Terry is embarrassed of his dads condition and how he wants to fix it. Terry's mom told him that it was the cause of the Vietnam War but wouldnt explain anything else. Becuase Terry was trying to solve his fathers problem, he starts learning more about the war and the effects on he soldiers. The reader can infer thats Terry wants to solve thise problem as soon as possible and wants to know the truth behind his fathers sudden movements.

In paragraph 2, the author writes that what really bothered Terry was when his father's eyes went away, what do you think this phrase means? (Stop the Sun)

In the article, the author writes in pargraphs 1 and 2 thats Terry was bottered when his father's eyes went away. I think tis phrase shows the reader that Terry was embarrased of his dad's sudden eye movements, but also because he did not know the cause of it. On page 1, Terry states, "And he stopped pushing it. But it bothered him whenever it happened. When something bothered him, he liked to stay with it until he understood it, and he understood no part of this." (Paulsen, Pg. 1). This statement shows that everytime Terry sees his fathers eyes go far away, he would be bothered because he did not know the cause of it. The reader can infer that he had some sense of guilt and pity because he saw his struggling, but because nobody would tell him what happened, the reader can also see that he is curious about his fathers condition. Terry also says, "But some part of Terry was embarrassed. He didn’t want to say why he wanted to know about Vietnam," (Paulsen, Pg. 2). This phrase shows the reader how Terry is embarrased to talk or be with his dad in public, which can be the cause on why Terry wants to solve his dad's condition.

The article, "Stop the Sun", portrays the theme on how you may not truly understand the struggles of someone else fully. This was shown as the author shows how Terry expresses throughout the story as he couldn't understand much about the war and its effects on one deeply. His father's eyes would always go far away and Terry was always confused on why. His parents would not tell him the cause, but as he was determined, he tried to learn more about the Vietnam War in which his father was a soldier of. But even after that, he couldn't understand what could possibly be the cause of his fathers sudden change in behavior. In fact, he was even embarassed to talk about his father's condition to others. But when he did ask his dad on why his eyes went away, his father explained to his the horrible sights he had seen during war. Those scenes kept playing in his fathers head and he broke down in tears whie explaining. Terry states, "He understood only that he didn’t understand and that he would probably never know what it was really like, would probably never understand what had truly happened. And maybe his father would never be truly normal," (Paulsen, Pg. 7). This statement shows the reader that Terry couldnt understand fully what his father went through even if he wanted to. Terry did not experience it inperson and only his father was the only one who would be able to know the whole truth and how it feels like. His struggles can not be interpreted by anyone else, even Terry.

In the short story, "Stop the Sun", I noticed the authors use of figurative language in many occasions, and also in the phrase above. The author uses a simile while describing how Terry's father was down on the floor, whimpering and squirming as he had a breakdown in the middle of the store thinking back to his time during the Vietnam War. I know the author used a similie because the author used the word "like" to compare a hurt animal with Terry's dad. This piece of figurative language is effective as it describes and compares Terry's dad to a hurt animal, letting the reader infer the state of Terry's dad. I believe the author used this simile to show how Terry's dad is struggling and remeniscing about the horrible scenes in his mind. Because of this comparision, I can picture how Terry's dad is on the floor, whimpering and curled up as his mind goes back to the time where he almost died during war.

Even though I can slightly understand how Terry is feeling because of his dad's condition, I cant not fully relate as I am never embarassed of my dad or the way he acts.

In the book, You'll be the death of me, I learned more about the three characters (Ivy, Matteo, and Cal) and what their relationship with each other was. The author describes how they knew each ther very well and were the bestest of friends in middle school, but after few conflicts and new friends, tehy slowly drifted apart. I can realte to this as I have had multiple friends which I am not as close with right now, and I learned that life just goes on.

Some character's fame is a huge part of their life and ruining it with the murder would ruin their reputation. The characters did not even report the murder to the police in the fear of losing their fame. I can not relate as if I was in their situation, I would be responsible and tell the situation to higher authorities.

The book, You'll Be The Death of Me, has many pieces of figurative language, including the one above. The words, "safety net" make up and idiom as there is no literal safety net, it is just a way of saying a backup plan so in the future, you would be all set. The authors use of figurative language is effective as it helps the readers understand what Cal may do in the future, but also what his dad's may want him to do.

I have switched schools before for the gifted program, and that made it hard to keep friends from my past school. Nina is going the a precollege program for 10 months and being away from her closest friends is going to be hard. In fact, her two other friends are neighbors so she never left them for such a long time. I can undertsand how Nina is feeling about leaving her friends behind because, I too, had to do that when I switched schools. It was a painful feeling but I knew i could still keep in contact with them and that I can still be friends with them.

In this phrase, the author is using personification when she says, "She could feel her own pulse running I know this because running is a human trait and an ability of humans, but as ones pulse is not a living thing, using the word running to decribe it would be personfification. This use of figurative language is effective as it describes how Nina feels about Ashley and how her pulse is "running" out of anger. The author included it to show the reader how much Ashley get's on Nina's nerves and how Ashley does not care about what others think. This makes me picture the tense relationship and allows me to undertsnad that Nina does not want to be roomates with Ashley at all.

I know that this is personfication as the author is adding a human trait, jumping in this case, to describe one's hair. I think the author added this to include another trait of Ashley that Nina is jealous and annoyed about. Nina mentioned before how she envies Ashleys slim figure and her naturally curled hair. This use of personification can allow the author to build more on Nina's viewpoint for Ashley. This helps the reader understand how Ashley's hair is bouncy and frizzles up whe she combs and untangles it. It helps the reader picture what Ashley may look like and this use of personification can let the reader know how her hair looks like currently.

I know this is a hyperbole because Avery is not actually stuck in the corner and it is just an extreme exagerration. The author wanted to imply that Avery wouldnt move and was stubborn towards her idea. She didnt allow Mel's point of view and she wouldnt move unless Mel dragged her. I think the author added this to show the reader the setting and also why Avery is hesistant to go to the place Mel mentioned. The reader can infer Avery not moving an inch untill Mel forcefully dragged her, and this can also show the reader her hatred to go to that place.

In the book, the romantic tensions between Avery and Mel slowly increased, but after the party they got drunk in, their desires grew. The next day when they woke up cuddling each other, Mel decided to go for it and she kissed Avery. Avery was thrown off with surprise, but she also explained how she saw Mel in that way too. This ensured the reader and Mel and Avery themselves as they now knew how they felt about each other. Though they did not name their current relationship, things have changed and their relationship is not the same as before. Things are more awkward between them and they are not best friends anymore. Both are not ready to be in a dedicated relationship, but feelings became love towards each other, changing the relationship of friendship.

Throughout the book, the relationship between Avery and Mel has been changing slowly and it finally came to a point where they both confessed, even though they were unsure about the whole situation. Mel and Avery currently have an unnamed relationship, as they are not lovers, nor are they friends. This makes things complicated and leads them to figure out how they feel. I can not relate as this whole situationa nd love itself is new to me, but I know that I am the type of person who is straighforward and true to any feelings that occur. Even if the situation I was in was not love, I know that I will be true and figure out my feelings quickly instead of prolonging it like Mel and Avery

In the book, a break in the future that can appear because Mel and Avery decided to keep their relationshop a secret from Nina. Avery and Mel finally decided to date, but it was clear that Avery was still confused and figuring out her sexuality. This made the relationship between Mel and Avery more complicated, but then Avery hesitantly agreed to date Mel. But once they found out that Nina was coming back from her pre college course, Avery tried to convince Mel that telling her about the relationship is not a good idea. Though Avery says that the reason they wont tell Nina is because it may be too much for her, but I beleive she is just not ready to open up about the relationship to anyone. In one sense, the readers can tell that Avery is somewhat confused and ashamed of it. I believe that them not telling Nina is a crack in their relationship and it may cause problems with trust and secrets in he future.

In the book, a scene I have realized that changed the relationship was when Nina found out about Mel and Avery. Throughout the past few days, Nina has noticed changes in their friendship and she realized the big gap that has been created between the three. Mel and Avery would make inside jokes while Nina would not be able to adjust to their new relationship. Nina felt jealous as she did not know why they changed so much during the summer. Once Nina saw Mel and Avery kissing, many questions ran across her mind an she felt left out as they did not tell her. On page 105, Nina says, "One, this explained a lot of what she'd felt since she'd been back from California. The constant feeling of being out of the loop." This explains the change of their relationship because it explains how Nina feels left out and also how she feels like she is drifting apart from Mel and Avery

In the book, The Bermudez Triangle, we know so far that Mel and Avery are in a relationship and are deciding not to tell anyone about it, even Nina. Nina has just came back from her pre college and she was excited to be with her two best friends again, though she was going to miss Steve, her now boyfriend. But Nina senses something is off with Mel and Avery. Nina realizes the privaleges she has to be going to a college precourse, but Mel and Avery have to work everyday to save up for college. Nina at first thinks that Mel and Avery are jealous because of her and her privalages, but she later realizes that she is being left out for everything. Nina feels like she is being left out on inside joes, tastes, new interests, and activities in general, and this directs a gap in their relationship. Nina soon realizes that they are not as close as they were before and that Mel and Avery are inseperable now. I think this scene helps me answer the annotation question as it shows one of the characters, Nina, realizing the gap that was created. She always that nothing has changed, but as Mel and Avery also started a new relationship, the friendship was obviously different.

But she soon realizes that things have changed and that everything was different in some way or the other. Nina noticed how Avery and Mel grew close and she felt left out at times because she didn't do the same activities as they did. Nina felt slightly guilty for being away for so long, but also jealous as she wanted to be part of what Mel and Avery were doing. I can relate to what Nina is feeling as I was switched school before too. I came back to meet my old friends and I immediatly realized that things were much more different than when I had left. I felt left out at times as inside jokes were not funny to me and I couldnt undersstand who they were as they changed

Nina did sense that something was off when she hung out with Mel and Avery, but she didnt realize what untill she saw them kissing with her own eyes. The fact that her two best friends were dating hadn't sunk in to her and it was a surpirsing and shocking fact she was not ready for.

A scene I realized that showed Mel, Avery, and Nina's change in their relationship was when Nina decided that not to talk things out with her friends. Nina states that she usually talks thing out with Mel and Avery and she tells them how she feels all the time. But after she found out about the relationship, she did not want to be a burden so she decided not to express her feelings. Instead, she decided she would write a letter to Steve telling him how she feels. On pg 112, it says, "She had no idea what to do now. Normall when she is stressed, she called Mel and Avery, which definitely was out of question." This sentence shows how she is not confortable sharing stuff with Avery and Mel anymore and that she thinks she is a bystader to heir relationship.
