Title: A Walk In The Words
Author and Illustrator: Hudson Talbott
Featuring: Hudson Talbott
Published: September 14, 2021
Publisher: Nancy Paulsen Books-Penguin Books
Pages: 32
Genre: Fiction/Children's Picture Book
Awards: Schnieder Family Book Award
Synopsis: This book focuses on the learning disabilities that pertain to reading. It brings awareness and normalcy to the idea that not everyone reads at the same level or the same pace and that is both okay and normal!

Curricular Connections: This book connects to both ELA and social-emotional learning. It connects to ELA because of the idea that not each student learns how to read, write, and spell at the same pace. ELA may come naturally to some, while for others it may be an area where they struggle more than others. It connects to social-emotional learning because it is spreading awareness while also encouraging perseverance and the idea that never giving up will get you farther in life than giving up and never looking back. It makes you a harder-working student and a more well-rounded individual overall!

Artistic Media: Colored pencils, watercolors, and pastels

Personal Response: I really enjoyed this book for the sole purpose of the fact that it brings awareness to reading disabilities. I feel that it is so important for younger kids to know that if you cannot read at the same level as your classmates, that does not make you any less smart, as a matter of fact, I think it makes you even smarter because it shows that you have to work harder to be a better scholar. I think that this is such an important book for students to read at a young age to bring this awareness and to know that everyone is unique and different!

Teaching Resources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9kKPixMBpQ

The theme portrayed throughout this book and this series is the use of magic, allowing the students to go on adventures.

Curricular Connections: This book mainly falls under the science category of curricular connections due to the use of magic. It is a book that allows a child's imagination to be brought to life. Any kid ever would love to travel back or forward in time, so reading this chapter book, will allow them to grow an interest in science and the magic aspect that science also has.

Artistic Media: The use of drawings with colored pencils and watercolors really brought the words to life throughout this book.

Personal Response: I really enjoyed this book and will always love the Magic Tree House series. I grew up with these books so to see they are still making them makes me so happy. I love the magic aspect of these books and the way they really let your imagination soar. It is so essential for students to let their imagination come to life and this series of books does an amazing job of allowing your imagination to run wild. In reality, no one could ever travel back in time to 1942, but thinking that one day it could be a possibility will allow children to preserve.

Teaching Resources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLIjdX3HpvU

Two out of the three pigs build homes using flimsy materials that are not reliable to build a home with. There is a big bad wolf that comes and blows their houses down, while the third pig builds his house out of brick and the wolf cannot blow it down!

Curricular Connection: I believe that this relates to social-emotional learning because it shows the idea of persistence. The three little pigs who did not give much effort into their houses ended up at a loss whereas the third pig who took his time and did not give up making the house with wood ended up defeating the big bad wolf. Isabel Campoy, and David Diaz
Published: 2013
Publisher: Charlesbridge Publishing
Pages: 99
Genre: Poetry, Fiction

Synopsis: Thirteen young Latinos and Latinas living in America are introduced in this book celebrating the rich diversity of the Latino and Latina experience in the United States. Free-verse fictional narratives from the perspective of each youth provide specific stories and circumstances for the reader to better understand the Latino people’s quest for identity. Each profile is followed by nonfiction prose that further clarifies the character’s background and history, touching upon important events in the history of the Latino American people.

Curricular Connections: This book strongly relates to history because it touches on the Spanish Civil War, immigration to the US, and the internment of Latinos with Japanese ancestry during World War II. All of these are brought up in each of the different poems brought by the different characters.

Personal Response: I really loved this book and truly believe that no single work can cover every expression of Latino life in the United States, yet this book for middle-grade readers provides a generous glimpse of historical, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic aspects of the community. The authors’ approach pairs thirteen character vignettes, written as monologues in free verse, with matching expository sections of historical and cultural information. Collectively, the alternating sections deliver vivid, easily digestible insights into what is meant by Latino. There is no single Latino identity, the characters seem to say, and each of us is worthy of your attention.

Teaching Resources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdS3WrMSXHw
