My friend Jannat is an Muslim American woman who chooses to wear a hijab as a way to keep her modesty and represent her religion. There is a very big misconception in American culture that all Muslim women are forced against their own will to wear a hijab. This idea was touched on in Under Western Eyes, Mohanty Lecture. Mohanty explained that western society often views women of color through a monolithic lens and victimize women in the third world without fully understanding their culture. Without understanding the importance of a hijab from women in the Muslim community, it is easy to assume that a hijab is a form of oppression. Where as for some, it is a liberating experience.

This is my grandma who means the world to me and is my second mom. When she was younger she had to work multiple jobs and was not spend as much time with her kids because she had to be the breadwinner for the family. There are many assumptions that Hispanic women must stay in the domestic sphere and are not allowed to leave. However, in order to provide for her kids, she had to work long hours and get multiple jobs. The Latina Transnational Motherhood by Hondagenu- Solteo and Avila, relates to my grandmas experiences in that she was going against the Western norms of Motherhood (being at home) especially during her time. White Women were often able to be stay at home moms, where as many Latina women, like my grandmother, had to leave the household to provide for the family. Some may see Latina Mothers leaving their kids for work as a form of abandonment, but it was actually the only way they support their kids given their circumstances.

Georgiann Davis is an intersex individual who was born perfectly healthy and was not told she was living with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome. Davis was born with female genitalia and also had internal testes, which was a reason why she could not have children. However, medical doctors operated on her (removing the testes) and claimed that she had "cancer," without giving her a true diagnosis. This relates to the Kessler: Medical Construction of Gender Lecture in that Kessler exposes that a physicians' own personal thoughts on what male and female is, can diffuse into their medical decisions, and how they treat their patients. Western Medicine, especially in the United States, is set up in a binary way and does not allow for any ambiguity. As a society, we should educate that intersex is completely normal and that people should not be put through forced surgeries. Further, we should encourage therapy and provide informed consent.

The horrific Atlanta Shooting ended up being the reason for this woman's death. According to experts, the motive behind the shooting can be linked to the perpetrators hypersexualization of Asian women. Throughout America, some individuals created this idea that Asian women are submissive, timid, and open to engage in sexual acts. This fetishization of Asian women puts many at risk of sexual harassment and creates unwanted attention for many. Yamada's, Asian Pacific American Women and Feminism Lecture elaborates on this fact that Asian women are seen as passive, charming, and exotic. These judgmental assumptions about Asian women creates a dangerous and unsafe environment for some to live in.

There is a prevalent assumption by westerners (white feminist) that black women must automatically support all other black women just because they are also black and a woman. This is dangerous because we may ignore the actual character of the person when we do this. This idea was talked about in the Combahee River Collective Lecture. Of course the gesture of black women supporting other black women is great, however we cannot let this notion cloud what a person actually stands for. This also relates to modern day identity politics (voting for someone just because they are a minority and a woman). Some individuals like Candace Owens, use their identity as a source of political radicalization. Candace Owens is known for being against planned parenthood, immigration, and vaccination.
