Kathrine Ryan showed nothing less than true accomplishments in her life. From being "the first female gold inspector collecting royalties on gold nuggets being taken from Yukon.." (A. Morrell. 2015) to being the “First female member of the North West Mounted Police and helped establish order among those involved in the Gold Rush. An adventurer, a traveller, an educator, a nurse, a prospector, a restaurateur, and a mother-figure to most who knew her, Klondike Kate carved out for herself a legacy, and became a legend at the same time. Klondike Kate has left her mark in history as an early suffragette and important political figure in Northern Canada.” (Historical Canada. 2019) Katherine was an extraordinary women and accomplished truly amazing things.

Struggles Kate Endured:

Kate struggled with taking care of her brothers sons after he left. "She fostered them after he left and was extremely selfless in taking them in, even though it wasn't easy" (N, Peterson, 2015.) Kate looked after those boys as if they were her own and as can be believed, when she found out she had lost Leo (as well as so many others she knew from the bodies found and brought back to Vancouver after the first World War), that her life was turned upside down. Kate also struggled with sexism and judgement from others, as well as the loss of wealth and businesses. However with all the struggles Kate endured, she bounced back and lived through them.

Intersection with Gender

At this time in life, we know that the times were very different and showed much more sexism towards women. Kate knew of this we learn because in all her life, she was a constant strong, resilient, independent and fierce women who would go on to accomplish so much and squash the thoughts of “these are jobs for men” and “women can’t / shouldn’t do that”. For example, the notion of "women are not made for mining, its a man's job" (D. Bates, 2012) was no discouragement to Kate, as we know she became the first female gold's inspector. We learn from all of her accomplishments and struggles, that even with all the intersections with her gender and the sexism that came with that, that she kept going and proved those who doubted her wrong.
