I am imagining that I am going to France for a holiday. I will need to book my flights, obtain a passport and convert some Australian money into the French currency. I must figure out what I am going to do while I'm there. I will have to try some French food! The most important activity I wish to complete during my time in France is to swap my Australian culture for the French way of life and experience France to the fullest!

Question 2: Which airline will you choose to fly with and why? How much will the airfare cost for a return economy seat?

For my trip to Bordeaux I started my journey at the Launceston airport. I then made my way to Melbourne on Jetstar. I have flown with Jetstar before, and know that they are a trusted and pleasant airline to fly with.
From Melbourne I flew with China Eastern to Shanghai. This flight took 10 hours and 40 minutes.
Also, with China Eastern Airlines, I flew from Shanghai to Paris, taking approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes.
After arriving in the Paris airport; Charles de Gualle Airport (CDG), I flew to Bordeaux. After 1 hour and 15 minutes of travelling, again with China Eastern, I landed at the Mérignac Airport, in Bordeaux.
Without past experience flying with the China Eastern Airline, the desicion to travel with them for the vast majority of my sky-high journeys was soley based on their availability and affordibility. For an adult's (adult age was 11+) return economy ticket, flights for my holiday cost $1,971.60. This deal was among the cheapest on offer, and seems to be considerably reasonably priced.

Due to the changes in timezones, my internal body clock will indeed be disrupted. However, I can treat my jetlag that I will experience with ample drinking water, by wearing comfortable clothes and shoes and by adapting and adjusting to my new Bordeaux schedule!

Question 6: You are staying in Paris for a few days. Name 3 places you will visit and what you expect to do there. Why do you want to see these?

The first place I would like to visit during my time in Paris, is The Louvre. The Louvre is the world's largest art museum, and it's right here where I am visiting, in Paris! The Louvre houses many of the world's most famous masterpieces; including Da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa' and Théodrore Géricault's 19th Century oil painting, 'The Raft of Medusa.' During my time at the museum, I am able to choose a tour plan. I can have an audio tour, using a device, that will have audio playing telling me about the history behind each artpiece. I can have a tour lead by a tour-guide, a true expert in the details of each masterpiece. Excluding Tuesdays, the gallery is open every day of the week from 9 o'clock AM. The Louvre will be such an interesting place to visit! I already enjoy looking through museums, and The Louvre will be an amazing museum to look through.

After a busy morning wandering and marvelling in The Louvre, some fresh air is just what I need! The next place I am going to visit is the Jardin du Luxembourg. In English, Jardin du Luxembourg translates to Garden of Luxembourg. These beautifully landscaped gardens are filled with statues, monuments and fountains, and of course impeccably well-kept plants and flowers. Perhaps best of all, a stroll through this sweeping city park is completely free! The 17th century Jardin du Luxembourg is the second largest park in Paris, and is the garden of the French senate. This sprawling park is walking distance from most of Paris' main attractions. After a busy day in bustling Paris, a trip to Jardin du Luxembourg is the perfect way to unwind, read a book, have a picnic or just to watch the world go by.

The last place I wish to visit during my time in Paris, is the Notre Dame Cathedral. Notre Dame Cathedral, also referred to as Notre Dame de Paris, meaning our lady of Paris, is a Gothic cathedral. The cathedral was built during France's Gothic period in the 12th century. The cathedral sports large gargoyle statues and stained glass windows. It was vastly damaged during the French Revolution, and was restorated in the 19th century. During my time at Notre Dame I will explore the intriguing gargoyles further in a Tower Tour. I'll climb the 422 steps around and around until I reach a landing where I can see the many gargoyles of the tower. I'd love to visit the Notre Dame Cathederal because it seems to have a very alluring and fascinating history. I adore learning about the dark and mysterious histories of places, and a trip to the Notre Dame Cathedral will definitely expand my knowledge.

Question 7: You want to taste some french food. Name 3 foods you would like to eat and describe what they are made of. Why do you want to taste these?

The first French dish that I would like to try is duck confit. In English 'confit' means 'candied.' Duck confit consists of duck thighs that have been cooked in their own fat, until the meat is extremely soft and tender. Particularly in south-western France, the duck is seared until the skin is beautifully crisp. Duck confit is mainly served with a side of garlic potatoes that have been sautéed in duck fat. I have tried duck before and enjoyed it, so I would love to try a French version of the dish I have already tried. Also, I would love to try duck confit because it sounds simply scrumptious!

Along with duck confit, I would adore to taste-test steak-frites. Steak-frites is a meal that is made up of classic french-fry style chips and a piece of steak, often a rib eye that has been pan fried with butter. I have tasted both components of this dish seperately and it would be interesting to try them on a plate together.

After dining in a French feast, I hope I have room for desert because I would love to try paris-brest! Paris-brest is a ring shaped cake that is split and filled with praline flavoured ice-cream, and has yummy shredded almonds on top. This desert was created to celebrate the bicycle race between Paris and Brest. Apart from this treat being totally delicious, I think that tasting it would provide an opportunity to try something new and unique. Paris-brest is made of pastry, and pastry is not always used in sweet deserts, which intrigues me.

During my travels in France I have noticed how prominent the wine industry is, so I decided to buy my friend a bottle of French wine. I have spent some of my trip in Paris ticking boxes on my bucket list, but I spent majority of my time in Bordeaux, so the wine I have chosen for my friend originates from Bordeaux. The white wine is called 'Grand Bateau Blanc.' In English the name of this wine means 'large white boat.' This wine costs 7 Australian dollars, equating to 4.64 euros.

Question 9: Compared to Australia, what differences and similarities can you see while travelling in France?

When greeting someone in France you are most likely to kiss the others cheeks once on each side, this is a common custom. Australia, however, usually greets with a handshake. I have noticed that buying, food especially, in France is alot cheaper, even after converting the euros into dollars. Following a food theme, eating in France is a symbol of togetherness and a favourite pastime. Most meals in France start with an éntree, followed by a main course, and then a desert. Dinners and lunches in Australia tend to be alot smaller.

Some similarities between my home country and France include; France and Australia are countires that both heavily practice the Christian religion. Both cultures share various styles of dancing, along with soccer being an extremely popular sport within the youth community. The legal age for drinking is 18 in both nations.

Question 10: What words can you see that you recognise? What words can you see in English? Why would there be English words in France?

Not exclusively in France, but all over the world, English words are used in non-english speaking nations. Some phrases I can recognise include "Happy Hour" the English phrase that is commonly advertised within bars, a time in the day where all drinks are discounted, in France the phrase of the same meaning is pronounced "ah-pee-owar." The term weekend is hyphenated, 'week-end,' and used in France to convey the same meaning as in English. Other borrowed English words used in France include; jogging, interview/interviewer, job, brunch and football. I noticed that many English words were used in abundance in advertising and directional signage. Helpful prompts, like 'toilet' and 'airport' could be spotted to help English speaking tourists, like me, find our way around.
