David Santiago Pérez's Theretical Perspective

The theory that I will use is The Influence of Climate in Language. It was developed by Everett, Blasi, and Roberts (2015) and it was used to study the phonological system of a region in relationship with its influence from climate factors. This theory indicates that arid climates tend to increase jittery sounds, as increase heat reduces the humidity of the vocal cords; whereas increased humidity, broadens the tonal system of a language, as it happens in Cantonese and the various dialects of Mandarin. As applied to my topic, this theory holds that I would expect my independent variable, climate to influence or explain the dependent variable, the presence and quality of phonemes in various languages; because, if the development of a language is historically consistent within one region, languages should evidence phonological features that are directly derived from its climate context; this happens as a result of the development of the vocal cords, where climate, considerably modifies its anatomical features.

I have read your theoretical perspective. The introduction and preliminary explanation are really well presented, the learning process is such a marvelous topic, discussed from various points of view, such as the linguistic, the psychological and the philosophical. I’d like to mention that the variables don’t seem to be correctly articulated. It is just a simple matter of prepositions and verbs’ usage, regardless of this grammatical observation, I understood well your perspective. Nice job!

The theory of schemes is a really interesting theory, and I believe is profoundly qualitative, thus it’s quite hard to simplify into dependent and independent variables, that can be the reason why you didn’t bother writing about them. Having said that, I find it quite amusing, how, of all the theories there are in the world, you coincide with Cristian’s template on that theory, I can see how they differ from each other, but once again, it’s surprising.
