In this song Kelly Clarkson is the speaker. The occasion of her writing this song is because her father left her when she was young so she grew up without a father. Kelly later on got married and had a child of her own which inspired her to write piece by piece. This song tells her father that her and her husband will never do the same to their daughter and that her husband will be a better father than he was ever.

Kelly Clarkson acting as the speaker attempts to tell her father that she doesn’t need him and her husband would never do the same thing he did to her and their daughter. They use the appeals of ethos and pathos in the lyrics and the appeals of ethos and pathos also in the video to get this message across. In analyzing the lyrics and video, it appears that their use of appeals is effective in convincing their intended audience.

Lyrics Analysis- Pathos

Pathos- In looking at how Kelly uses emotion in her lyrics, we can see her first word choice of "That a man can be kind and a father could stay". This choice of words show that she was hurt when her father left but she also has reassurance from her husband that there are still good men out there in the world. Her husband has shown Kelly that their daughter will never have to worry about her father walking out on her. Kelly also shows pathos when she says "So I was worthless", her dad made her feel like she had no purpose. Kelly felt like she served no purpose to her father until she got famous because that is when her father started to try to reach out.

Lyric Analysis- Ethos

Ethos- In the lyrics to piece by piece there are lots of examples of ethos. The first example of ethos is when Kelly states "But your love, it isnt free, it has to be earned", this is showing creditability because she wont accept her fathers love after what he did. If he wants to have a relationship again he will have to earn it. The second example of ethos is "Because unlike you, I'm gonna put her first". This is saying that unlike what Kellys dad did to her she will put her daughter first always, her daughter will be her main priority at all times. Lastly in the lyrics Kelly says "He never walks away, he never asks for money", she is giving credibility to her husband in this part. Her husband never asks her for things since she is becoming famous and making more money. Since Kelly has started to get fame her father only reaches out to her for money.

The lyrics use many appeals throughout the song but mainly ethos and pathos to get the point across to her father that he was a horrible father and her husband will never do what he did. The video also used lots of ethos and pathos to connect the lyrics with the video and show how what the people in the video are going through. Overall, Kelly is effective with both the lyrics and video to show her father how he made her feel.
