Why did towns and cities develop & then grow?

Towns offered new economic opportunities and attracted more workers. This led to towns becoming bigger and often developing into cities. Even though many serfs were legally bound to their lord’s manor, they ran away and became free by living within a town. Many serfs, now free people, made better lives for themselves. The crusades were very expensive allowing serfs to buy themselves freedom. These serfs would move to towns making them grow.

Merchants got introduced which did not fit into the manorial system. Serfs could buy themselves free because lords needed money to pay the high taxes the king wanted. This changed the closed system into an open system. Merchants only paide the king instead of Lords. This weakened nobles and increased the power and wealth of the king.

Guilds helped. Merchant guilds made sure prices were equal and standards stayed high. New farming innovations helped make more food. More food made living standards better. The surplus of food meant people could survive birth. The food also made people live longer really increasing living standards. They rubbed different things like onions and chopped up snakes on the sick body. The doctors would test urine colour and some would even taste it to see if they had the plague.

Living standards were poor for many reasons. It was very unclean this was very unhealthy. Peasants even lived with livestock in their houses. Some of the wealthy could afford leaving areas with the plague and death. This then would mean that those wealthy people that moved had good living standards. There was enough food because so many people had died and they had a lot of food. This would have increased living standards. Wages increased due to the low amount of workers giving serfs more money making them able to but things to increase the living standards.
