This led to towns becoming bigger and often developing into cities. Even though many serfs were legally bound to their lord’s manor, they ran away and became free by living within a town. Many serfs, now free people, made better lives for themselves. The crusades were very expensive allowing serfs to buy themselves freedom. Depending on what type of the plague you got increased or lowered your chances of surviving. If you got the septicaemic plague you died and had no chance of surviving. The pneumonic plague gave you almost no chance. This meant that one out of ten people would survive this.
