Johnny Depp won $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages from the trial. The actress won one of the three lawsuits and received $2 million. 

After the verdict, Heard's lawyers blamed hate from people on social media directed at the actress for, in part, influencing the jury's decision. However, the jury denied that claim, saying that three of the seven jurors did not even have a Twitter account.

Ultimately, the jury found that the actress was the "aggressor" in the relationship.

En especial, se habla de las situaciones de violencia que sufría el actor por parte de Amber Heard como una bofeteada, tirarle una copa de vino en la cara o arrojarle el control remoto de la TV a la cabeza, a pesar de esto la actriz, niega todo. Pero, un psicólogo trato de definir la relación como “abuso mutuo” refiriéndose al abuso verbal y físico que hubo durante la relación. También, se habló sobre las adicciones que Depp tenía con las drogas.

Mucha gente quiso participar en cada sesión del juicio, así como fans de Johnny Depp como abogados, psicólogos, terapeutas de abusos. 

The news talks about how Johnny Depp is appearing in the defamation trial. In particular, it talks about the violence that the actor suffered from Amber Heard as a slap, throwing a glass of wine in his face or throwing the remote control of the TV to his head, despite this the actress denies everything. But a psychologist tried to define the relationship as "mutual abuse", referring to verbal and physical abuse during the relationship. There was also talk of Depp's drug addictions.

Many people wanted to participate in each session of the trial, as well as Johnny Depp's fans, lawyers, psychologists and abuse therapists. 

The couple split in 2016 and subsequently clashed in court over a  op-ed Heard wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, in which she described the domestic violence she suffered, without mentioning Depp by name. Depp sued for $50 million in damages. The jury unanimously found that Heard failed to substantiate her allegations against Depp and that she knew her claims of abuse were false when she published her 2018 essay. The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages in his defamation suit. Heard countersued Depp for $100 million and said his violence was due to self-defense or in defense of his younger sister.

A lo que Amber heard comienza a negar todo, sin embargo, la abogada de Jhonny Deep comienza a exponer algunos  de los testimonios que fueron confirmados como falsos a lo largo del caso. Like for example that Jhonny Deep never grabbed her arm, never hit her, and she organized a plan for a paparazzi to take pictures of him with alleged "hits".

This year we worked as a team, closely investigating the so-called "trial of the year" that lasted 6 weeks in the state of Virginia, on the Atlantic coast of the southern United States

Our team is made up of 5 members: Barbaro Agustín, Cabral Simón, Calderón Giuliana, Pistagnesi Giuliana and Tarre María Pilar.

We chose this topic, because as future communicators we wanted to be aware of American show business and the international news . The case was very controversial news in April 2022, all the media talked about the former couple, the trial was televised and it was a trend on twitter throughout its duration.

Johnny Depp is an American actor and musician who was known for his eclectic and unconventional film choices. He achieved perhaps his greatest success as Capt. Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Amber Hear is an American actress too.

In 2015 Depp wed the actress Amber Heard, and their tumultuous marriage became tabloid fodder. Heard notably accused him of physically assaulting her and alleged that he had substance abuse issues. They divorced in 2016, and two years later Heard wrote an op-ed for The  Washington Post claiming that she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Also in 2018 The Sun, a British newspaper, referred to Depp as a “wife beater.” 

He sued the paper for libel, and the trial ended in 2020 with the judge ruling against Depp, stating, “I accept that Mr. Depp put [Heard] in fear of her life.” During this time Depp also sued Heard, for defamation over her article in the Post. She in turn countersued, alleging that Depp defamed her when one of his lawyers called her abuse claims a hoax. 

The televised trial began in April 2022, and it became something of a media circus; the trial was especially popular on social media. After six weeks of testimony which included both sides accusing each other of domestic abuse.

Throughout Amber's testimony, viewers noticed that Johnny didn't so much as glance in his ex-wife's direction. During her redirect examination on May 18, Amber explained to the jury why she believes her ex-husband won't look at her. "He's guilty, and know he's lying. Otherwise, why can't he look at me?" 

Jhonny's attorney Camille  claimed she knew exactly why Johnny wouldn't look at her: "He promised you'd never see his eyes again"

We also choose a video where Johnny Depp explains the violent situation he suffered at the hands of Amber Heard. The actor tells the story of the moment when Amber threw a bottle against his hand and, as a result, took off his finger. He says: “i looked at my hand and saw the bone. THe flesh part of the finger wasn’t there, there was a lot of blood” 

Amber’s legal team asked for a mistral. A couple of days after Heard’s calls for a mistral, Depp’s legal team responded saying that the court should deny her request because Heard didn’t prove that the wrong juror was unfairly prejudiced against her so a mistral would be an “extraordinary remedy” to such a mistake. 

Finally, the jury ruled for Depp in his lawsuit, finding that Heard had acted with “actual malice.” Depp was awarded $15 million in compensatory and punitive damages, though the judge lowered the amount to $10.35 million. The jury also found that Heard had been defamed by Depp’s attorney, but she did not prevail on two other counts. She was given $2 million in compensatory damages.

By choosing to lie about her husband for her own personal benefit, Amber Heard chose to ruin his reputation. 

it was dIfficult to do the work when the trial ended, because we did not have more information, however on June 15 Amber Heard appeared for the first time in “Today” mark the first time the actress has spoken to the media about the verdict in the high-profile trial sparked by the defamation lawsuit Depp filed over the op-ed she published with The Washington Post. Heard sat down with “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Gathrie for an extensive interview that aired over Tuesday and Wednesday mornings on NBC and will also be the focus of Frida’s “Dateline”. Guthrie pressed Heard on several of her decisions related to the trial, including to write the op-ed after the resurgence of the ·MeToo movement.  

In conclusion, the trial was very interesting and kept society awake  We liked being able to work on the subject and learn the English language by watching the trial

CONCLUSIÓN

Nuestro proyecto anual sobre el juicio que Johnny Depp le inició a Amber Heard, tuvo varios recorridos a lo largo del año en los que realizamos 4 entregas que consistían en la busqueda de imagenes, noticias y videos implicadas con el tema, a los que luego aportamos una elaboración escrita tanto en inglés como en español de los ejes tratados en cada entrega. En base a estas, nos encargamos de utilizar diferentes recursos que nos proporciona la web como por ejemplo, las búsquedas avanzadas, el cambio de idioma, youtube y el traductor; Linguee ( https://www.linguee.es/espanol-ingles/traduccion/traductor+ingl%C3%A9s+espa%C3%B1ol.html). También, para realizar la entrega final de nuestro portafolio utilizamos la página web, padlet (https://es.padlet.com/dashboard).

Las búsquedas avanzadas nos permitieron buscar precisamente por medio de filtros de fecha, nombres y documentos lo que quisiéramos encontrar del caso de manera más rápida y hábil. Luego, con la herramienta de cambio de idioma logramos encontrar las noticias en inglés de manera más fácil. También, con la plataforma de YouTube, además de encontrar los videos necesarios, con la opción de colocar subtítulos pudimos entender de lo que se hablaba en los videos así como también, con la opción de generar transcripción tuvimos una manera más sencilla de obtener las palabras mencionadas en los videos y así poder traducir las que no entendíamos. De la mano con esto último mencionado, para traducir las palabras utilizamos Linguee, que es un traductor online con la opción de Inglés (británico) -Español muy fácil de utilizar. Y por último, con la plataforma Patlet recomendada por la cátedra, fue con la que pudimos organizar toda  la información que recolectamos a lo largo de las entregas.

El proyecto surgió a partir de un tema visto en la unidad 1 de la materia Inglés I, llamado “What the difference between Broadsheet Newspaper and Tabloids?” (¿Qué diferencia hay entre diarios y revistas?). En conjunto elegimos la temática de revistas porque nos parecen más entretenidos los temas que hay dentro de estas. Además, de que se trataba de un juicio de dos personas famosas en el ámbito del cine y Hollywood.

El tema que elegimos tuvo mucha difusión y controversia en la mitad de este año y, junto con el grupo decidimos que podría ser un tema de bastante interés ya que, el juicio se transmitió en vivo día a día por un mes, y cada vez salían más declaraciones e información al respecto por parte de los medios de comunicación de todo el mundo. Por lo que seguimos el juicio en sus diferentes momentos hasta su veredicto final, aunque haya durado solo un mes tuvimos bastante por recorrer del mismo y, pudimos extraer los momentos más relevantes del juicio y los que nos parecieron más oportunos para presentar en el proyecto que cabe destacar, son los que luego expondremos a nuestros compañeros y profesoras.  

El aprendizaje que obtuvimos de este trabajo es la capacidad de investigar los diferentes significados de las palabras para comprender el contexto de las noticias y de los videos, así como también aprendimos a filtrar las búsquedas con determinadas herramientas para que los resultados de las mismas sean más específicos y correctos. 

Como grupo, nos pudimos organizar de forma tal que cada uno tenía una tarea determinada de cada entrega y si surgía alguna duda o en el caso de tener que dar algún punto de vista grupal, consultabamos a modo de foro en nuestro grupo de whatsapp y así retroalimentar el trabajo de cada uno de los participantes. También, al finalizar cada tarea, revisábamos y corregíamos las traducciones, los videos y fotos en conjunto para que la entrega sea lo más correcta posible. 

En conclusión, con este trabajo grupal logramos familiarizarnos más con el idioma y también, pudimos articular los conceptos vistos en clase de manera que la forma de trabajar y llevar a cabo cada consigna fuese mucho más práctica y enriquecedora para cada uno de nosotros. Temas como el presente simple y el pasado simple, se fueron entrelazando con las clases y las entregas para poder poner en práctica dichos contenidos en la elaboración de nuestros escritos en inglés.
