He was still out after Kaine, so he decided that His friends and him should meet in the Wake to figure out how to achieve this. Micheal had messaged Sarah under a false profile, so that Kaine couldn't track them. He stole money from his new "Parents" and went off to find Sarah.

After they all got together they contacted they got teamed up with Agent Weber to fight against Kaine. She loads them up with coding that will hide them from Kaine. They want to stay hidden and try to figure out what's going on inside the VirtNet. 

In the end Weber sent them into the VirtNet to take down Kaine's central programming. They never truly went into the VirtNet and instead attacked an actual building in the Wake. The later learned that they destroyed the entire VNS system. This changes the whole story. Knowing the "good guys" created the "bad guy" is an important part of the story.
