Neal Dow was against all drinking in America. During the 19th century American's drank an extreme amount of alcohol. He criticized Americans by their use of alcohol and how much they drank. He wanted to get involved with the law to potentially make drinking illegal.

Dow traveled all around the north and west hemispheres to decrease the amount of alcohol. Then, he entered into many different temperance activities. Dow and others in the Maine Temperance Union created a program aimed at total abolition of liquor sales. Because a substantial number of the members were also antislavery advocates, they doubly antagonized the conservative pro-liquor forces.

In 1851 Dow became mayor of Portland and applied himself to influencing the state legislature and governor to pass the measure. Despite bitter recriminations it became law, and its passage made Dow famous. He applied the "Maine Law" firmly in Portland and accepted engagements throughout the North to express his sentiments against liquor and slavery.

He strongly fought for his beliefs even though it was difficult. Dow never showed fear of loss and was a determined man. Most Americans drank an excessive amount before Dow’s “Maine Law” and he completely changed that type of lifestyle.

The “Maine Law” lasted until 1933, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt ended federal prohibition. However, it did last until then, keeping the consumption and manufacturing laws of all liquor illegal. Dow is today known as "The father of Prohibition".

David J Hanson, a modern-day prohibitionist, taught sociology and the effect of alcohol on it. He argues that banning alcohol sales teaches children better values and stops people from “looking like a bunch of knuckle-dragging yahoos.” Today, dry counties make up about 10 percent of the United States’ landmass. Hanson is similar to Dow because they have the same beliefs and reasoning of banning alcohol.
