The figurative meaning of this quote is when Beatty is talking to Montag he makes an Allusion to the Greek mythology, Icarus. Beatty made this Allusion to Montag for a few reasons. One of those reasons is that Beatty thinks that Montag was getting brash and overexcited so he was becoming more and more careless. Even with Beatty's warnings, Montag still got books and even showed people them. This is similar to Icarus because Daedalus, Icarus' father warned him but Icarus ignored him and flew to high to the sun and then died.

The symbolic meaning of the phoenix, changes as the novel progresses. While it begins as a symbol of the fire and censorship, it takes on a new meaning at the end of the novel because there is hope that the city can be reborn, just like the phoenix. Unlike the phoenix, however, there is a realization that society must learn from its past mistakes and never let censorship take over again.

The Phoenix in Fahrenheit 451 was mostly represented by the firemen in the story. Its main meaning is that hope that out of fire civilization would be reborn. The phoenix is symbolic in this novel because, it is hoped, this is what will happen to the society in the book. It has been killing itself with fire using fire to destroy all the books and then it is finally destroyed in a huge flash of fire the nuclear war
