My initial thought is that the whole process was bizarre. I personally could not trust someone who treated me with herbs based on finger clicks. On the other hand, I realize that there are so many things that I don't know about. I am not well informed on herbal supplements and homeopathic cures. I believe mostly in science, but there is a thin veil between practical science and faith. A person's faith or their outlook could possibly affect their mentality which could affect their ability to heal, I suppose.

After Tyler left the father was left without a crew and had to turn to scraping to get the money to keep the house running. He got the kids to help him scrap metal from old cars. Tara began to work in the scrap yard with her father and brothers while also helping her mother with "medical remedies". At this time Tara is about 10 so I think it is a reasonable time for her to start working but I don't know about working in a scrap yard with stray pieces of metal everywhere.

There are certain things, like a broken bone, that someone can tough you and know, but a person can not ask a question, click fingers, and the answer magically shows up.

Faye is still suffering from her brain injury, and it makes her question her abilities as a midwife. She drifts away from working as a midwife to concocting blends of essential oils which she believes have healing properties. Faye seems to be moving away from a formerly scientific and rational perspective toward one where she relies on intuition and spiritual claims. I don't think her "abilities" are legitimate because a brain injury as bad as hers can cause you to think this crazy.

She called her children the wrong names without even realizing after her head injury and I believe that alone shows how severely she needs medical help. She is not in a place to be making healing oils and she does not know enough about a lot in the medical field for these abilities to be legitimate.

She works in the scrap yard with her father. The thing that struck me the most is that it seemed like a very dangerous environment for a child. Her father had very little regard for her wellbeing and treated her gruffly when she worked with him. Maybe I am just soft, but I would not allow one of my children (at that age) to work in those surroundings. I guess that they were just doing what they thought that they had to do in order to survive and make ends meet.

I don't think her abilities are legitimate. I think she believes her abilities are legitimate partly due to her brain injuries. She has suffered extreme damage to her brain and this has altered how clearly she thinks. I do believe God can heal people and prayer can help heal, but the idea that she can heal people through the energy of others sounds completely bizarre to me.

I think it is a good thing that she is working, but this job is a little too dangerous for a young girl. Her father is constantly throwing scraps around without acknowledging where Tara is standing. The metal is also very sharp and heavy. It is very rigorous and dangerous work for such young girl. She also helps her mother with her "remedies", which I think is more fitting work for her.

Tara has began working in the junkyard with her father to replace Tyler. This is where readers learn about the unsafe working conditions and the irrational choices that her father tends to make. Although most people of Tara's age do have chores, their chores do not include working in a dangerous junkyard. While the father might be attempting to teach her about a diligent work ethic, he was putting her and the rest of the crew in danger. Having her in the bin while he dumped tons of iron, and being disappointed when she was injured is not reasonable. A ten year old should be making up beds, washing dishes, and doing homework; she should not be hauling scrap with her father all day.
