They declared that they had been tricked to leave their homes by promises that they would be brought to Singapore and receive good wages as labourers and craftsmen. There was a promise that after paying a low sum for their journey, they would soon save enough money to send to their friends or to return home with.

We went to inspect a house in Telok Ayer, where the coolies had been confined.

The main danger came from gang robberies, which were reputed to be the work of Chinese secret societies. The immigrants were forced to join gangs and had to contribute part of their salary to their gang leader. Gangs of up to 200 Chinese raided parts of the town almost every night in the early 1840s. Their chief targets were the Malay districts, but they sometimes attacked Indians and Europeans too, breaking into buildings, ransacking and murdering. The whole town lived in fear and the tiny police force was careful to keep out of the way until the gangsters had gone.

(ATQ) This is evident because there were very few police officers in comparison to the people living in Singapore. In the table where there are only 18 police officers for a 16000 population. Also there were only 385 police officers for a 81000 population. (E) Which shows that all police officers were usually outnumbered (P/E) in situations like gang fights and riots

The evidence, 'main dangers came from gang robberies, which were reputed to be the work of Chinese secret societies' (EVI) This shows that crime rates were increased due to the constant attacks and robberies caused by the Chinese secret societys.
