This is done to reduce misconceptions about the actual meaning as many will try to use their own lived experiences (which are valid, but separate) as a rebuttal to "shut down" the actual definition of white privilege.

This has helped me understand that, as the article mentions how the privileges that come with being white turns into the norm for many and are not seen between others in similar situations, the only difference being their skin colour.

The statistic that Black Americans are 105% more likely and Latino Americans are 78 percent more likely than white people to receive a high-cost mortgage really put in to perspective white privelege. This combined with the analogys used help me learn more about the "conscious" actions which perpetuate white privelege.

I learned that the most important thing to do to understand the effects of white privilege is to educate people on what it is and what it isn't, and understanding that duality exists in the subject. Understanding that someone who has benefited from white privilege can use that to make others voices heard in a positive way and advocate for a positive change in our society. However, the opposite also exists, where someone who has been given the power of white privilege can use it as a weapon, or a convenient excuse to stay ahead of the less fortunate.

I learned that white privilege is not only more opportunity for white people but also it offers reassurance that your needs will be accounted for in society. For example, stores offering "skin color" band aids that only have one color. Additionally, i learned that peoples white privilege can blind them from the struggles that people of color face (since it doesn't affect them they don't notice it) and blind them from recognizing their own white privilege.

When reading and annotating the article "What is white privilege, really" I learned about how white privilege affects people daily, whether they notice it or not. there are also some other things that we do notice on the news and social media that before reading the article never thought stemmed from white privilege. like the statistic that the median white person who went to college has 7.2 times more wealth than the median black person and 3.9 times more wealth than the median Latino person.

Through this annotation assignment, I was able to dive deeper into what white privilege truly means. There were a variety of specific statistics that helped me to gain a deeper understanding. For example, one statistic that I learned was that the average net worth of a white household in 2014 was $141,900, while that number dropped to $11,000 for a Black household and $13,700 for a Hispanic household. This really stood out to me and helped me to understand how huge the wage/income gap is. The author also mentioned that the "equalizers" (going to university/college) don't narrow this gap for Black and Hispanic households. I found this quite upsetting.

I was surprised to find out It was previously thought of as psychological. I thought white privilege was always known as systemic and an advantage embeded into the things we learn, the things we do and the institutions that govern us. However, after reading this article i now know that this clearly isn't the case.

Through this assignment, I've learned how powerful and dangerous being silent towards systemic discrimination can be to towards groups that are oppressed and marginalized. Minorities that face racism NEED to speak up and face uncofomrtable situations to see and receive change in social systems, but their voices are often overshadowed and overpowered by those who have white privilege, as they have the power to create change in a government or community. It's extremely easy for those who are privileged to to turn a blind-eye to discrimination as they will never be affected, and will continue to receive inequitable advantages when they reamin silent, therefore have no reason to put themselves in discomfort to stand up for others.

The article mentions an example of white privilege as the convenience of hair care products being directly focused to treat white hair, rather than a small section being specifically labelled as "ethnic sections". Nonetheless, I learned that defining white privilege begins by stating what it is not. The article mentions that white privilege is NOT the suggestion that white people have never struggles and it is NOT the assumption that everything a white person has accomplished is unearned.
