Contact: Barb Lito
blito@vbgov.com

Virginia Beach GrowSmart is the City of Virginia Beach's early childhood education initiative. GrowSmart was created in 2009 when the former "Ready to Learn" team of the Virginia Beach Public Libraries formed a strong partnership with the Virginia Beach Health Department's Healthy Families Virginia Beach program. Under the new name of GrowSmart, a team of practitioners, led by a full-time GrowSmart Coordinator, came together regularly to assess the state of early childhood in our city and region and to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated local early childhood system.

The GrowSmart office was strategically moved from the Department of Public Libraries to the Department of Economic Development in 2011. This important organizational shift represents our City's understanding that early childhood education is an important economic issue. Workforce development begins in the years prior to kindergarten, when brain development occurs most rapidly. By helping our youngest children to grow up healthy and ready to succeed in school, we do what is right not just for our citizens, but for our future economic vitality.

Contact: Terrie Livingston
757-436-2722
terrie@insideoutlearners.com

Inside Out Learners, Inc. provides social skills instruction, academic tutoring, teen socials, and lots more through a variety of engaging activities, with the highest regard to the unique needs and interests of each individual. It is a stress-free setting for individuals ages 3 and up to learn strategies that help strengthen their ability to interact more effectively with others and/or their academic performance. Although our programs are autism-friendly, we serve a diverse population who benefit from a small group setting. We provide cutting edge, research-supported curricula and interventions that address essential skills needed to support social development and academic performance, regardless of the presence or absence of a formal diagnosis. At Inside Out Learners, Inc. we use a social-cognitive approach tailored to help individuals learn how to share space with others more effectively. Some of the many concepts we teach include how to: manage anxiety, improve executive functioning, read non-verbal social cues and body language, regulate emotions, think more flexibly, and improve conversational skills, among many others. Our small group design presents a safe and structured environment to facilitate positive social interactions that participants can generalize into other settings. To fully benefit from our services, clients must have average to above average language and cognition. Our programs are formatted for those who are independent in using the restroom facilities, remain with the group, and refrain from elopement, aggressive, or otherwise disruptive behaviors that require a higher level of supervision.

Carolyn Weems was first elected to the School Board in 2002 and then re-elected in 2006, 2010, and 2014. Weems moved to Virginia Beach after graduating from Clemson University and has lived here for 36 years. Weems and her husband, Billy, both coached and taught for Old Dominion University before having five children and starting their own business. For decades, Weems has volunteered in our schools, PTAs, churches and community organizations. She is very passionate about improving and expanding instruction and opportunities for students receiving special education and technical/career courses of study. Weems is the founder and president of Caitlyn’s HALO, a non-profit focused on Helping Addicts and Loved Ones. This was inspired after the tragic loss of their daughter, Caitlyn, after she became addicted to pain killers prescribed by doctors. To educate others, Weems was instrumental in getting HB1532 passed that mandates all schools in Virginia to offer opioid focused education. For her advocacy, Weems was named the recipient of the 2017 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award as well as the Virginia Beach Human Rights Award. In her spare time, Weems is co-chair of the Hampton Roads Opioid Working Group, a Sunday School teacher for Old Donation Episcopal Church, a Good News Club Leader, a reading tutor and a Cub Scout Den Leader. All of her children graduated from VBCPS and her granddaughter is currently attending Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Mrs. Carolyn D.
Social Learning - Social Butterflies Club

info@socialbutterfliesclub.com
757-422-6342

The Social Butterflies Club was founded in 2004 by Rhonda Osisek M.S., CCC-SLP. Rhonda created this program for a few of her clients that were having trouble interacting appropriately at school.

The clients were bright children but were labeled “behavior” problems at school. They were disrespectful because they did not “listen” to the teachers (no eye contact). They were “loners” and did not participate in activities (they walked the perimeter of the playground/gym). They could not “sit still” at their desks (they stood at their desk, rocked in their chair, and chewed clothing while trying to complete assignments). They “pushed classmates” while standing in line (they bumped into their classmates or stood too close in line).

Rhonda thought that if she could get these clients in their natural environment to teach these “social graces” (pragmatic language skills), along with the help of some sensory integration techniques (that she had just learned from an OT friend), the clients could easily be taught how to act appropriately. Some social programs on the market tended to be too boring or too narrowly focused on one skill at a time. Rhonda had a large caseload of clients and needed a program to address multiple goals at one time. Otherwise, she’d be teaching social skills one at a time for the rest of the client’s life! So, using many techniques from various therapy methods (picture communication, social stories, structured language activities, etc.) she created a group plan to address multiple goals while incorporating sensory integration techniques to help the clients focus. The Social Butterflies Club was born!

Over the years it has been fine tuned and has grown to encompass all ages and social skill levels. The program was enormously successful in its ability to teach multiple social skills in a one time a week one hour group. The clients loved the fun themes and activities and learned the skills almost immediately.

Rhonda and her colleagues continue to run the program year round at their facility in Virginia Beach. Rhonda also trains other professionals in The Social Butterflies Program so that they too can benefit from effective caseload management and a more successful way to teach social skills.

info@learnwithleaf.com
757-971-1414

“The Learning Environment for All Families”

At LEAF Behavior Support, we believe in empowering all families & community partners with the necessary tools to support people they love through person-centered learning experiences. Some people are able to benefit from our hands on learning experiences and some people do fine with a virtual check in. Whichever need best suits you, we can get it done!

Behavior Consultation uses the science of Applied Behavior Analysis in conjunction with person-centered principles to produce socially significant outcomes. Challenging behaviors often occur because the behavior is being reinforced in the environment by either gaining something positive or escaping something negative. By focusing on the context and outcomes of the problem behavior in the environment, it is possible to determine the function of the behavior. After the function is determined, a plan is developed to make the challenging behavior less effective and efficient, and make the desired behavior more functional. This can involve changing system strategies, altering environments, and teaching new skills.

Among other responsibilities John was part of a statewide training team that taught teachers to program for students with autism in an educational setting. Before retiring John completed Behavior Analysis coursework through Florida Institute of Technology and became a certified/licensed Board Certified Behavior Analyst in 2013. During her seven-year tenure in the classroom, Suzanna completed her Master's Degree in Special Education through Cambridge College, her BCaBA coursework via the University of Mary Washington, and her BCBA coursework via The Florida Institute of Technology. Suzanna is also a certificant of the 2014 Institute of Special Education Advocacy at the William and Mary Law School.

John and Suzanna first worked together in special education in the Hampton Roads Area.
