Taking time to build trust and demonstrate respect is the foundation upon which all other elements of learning are build. It starts with getting to know one another on the first day of school. It is embedded in the schedule we design together, rules we make together and we stories we create and share. A sense of community empowers students to hold others accountable for behaviors, learning, respect and kindness. Choice allows students to take ownership and responsibility for their learning. Students have controll over what they read and write. When we have say in the matter, we are much more motivated to complete the task.

Not managing and redirecting students. We need to be accountable to our students, we need to teach them whet it looks like, feels like and sounds like to participate in productive tasks. We now, with the implementation of the Daily 5 need to teach students to be accountable for choosing their own comfortable spots in the room where they engage in meaningful reading and writing for extended.  Also, we need to teach students they are accountable for the volume level. Increasing how much time you read, even by 10 minutes, increases your word exposure drasticly.
