Says:"Remote from all companions, knowing none but savage ways, a brute so huge, he seemed like no man at all of those who eat good wheaten bread; but he seemed rather a shaggy mountain reared in solitude"(Homer 88-92).
Means: This show Odyssues's first impression of the beast so huge it wasn't a normal size and ate something more than bread like men.
Matters: This is important because Odyssues sees what he his getting him and his men into and not going with his gut and still wanting to befried the beast.

" Godsake captain! Why bait the beast again? Let him alone! That tidal wave he made on the first throw all but beached us" (407-410).

Says: This is discribing how close the Cyclopes's came to killing all of Odysseus's men with a single throw of a piece of the mountian. However, Odyseeus contiued to taunt the beast, putting the life of his men at risk.

Matters: This is importing because it proves that odysseus is not perfect after all, in fact he has one of the biggest flaws of all, hubris, which is excessive pride.

Says:"Three abreast I tied them silently together, twining cords of willow from the ogre’s bed, then slung a man under each middle one to ride there safely, shielded left and right. So three sheep could convey each man. I took the woolliest ram, the choicest of the flock, and hung myself under his kinky belly"(282-288).
Means: Odyssues and his men are trying to get back to the ship and sail awaty from this forebiden land never to come back again.
Matters: This quote is important because he tied his men to the more calm and bigger female ewe. While he tied himself to the the more excited and male ewe. This shows how Odyssues puts his men before himself.

Says: " Then over the broad cavern floor, he ushered the ewes he meant to milk. HE left his rams and he-goats in the yard outside, and swung high over head a slab of solid rock. TWo dozen four wheeled wagons, with heaving wagon teams, could not have stirred the tonnage of that rock from where he wedged it over the doorsill(140-147).
Means: That Odyssues and his men are trapped with the cyclopes and have a limited amount of time before the cyclopes kills him and his men.
Matters: This is important because Odyssues starts stirring up a plan to escape the cave.

We say
put out again on good salt water!"
Means:This is showing how much odyssues really wants to be friend the beast by not stealsing him food.
Matters: This is important becausee it shows Odyssues's most important quality that is cleverness because he is thinking about what would happen if they would have stole the food then tried to be friend the beast.

Says: " I drove my big hand spike deep in the embers, charring it again, and cheered my men along with battle talk to keep their courage up no quitting now... I drew it from the coals and my for fellows gave me a hand lugging it near the cyclopes... Straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye"(227-237).
Means: This means that Odyssues's plan is coming through adn is working.
Matters: This is important because through the whole time of the plan Odyssues never thought of himself over his men when escaping and while trapped.

Says: "Neither reply nor pity came from him, but in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering the floor. Then he dismembered them and made his meal" (Homer 191- 195).

Says: This quote graphically discribes the brutal murder of two of Odysseus's very own men. This quote also used an intense epic simile when discribing the killing of his men.

Means: This is important because it proves that even in the most intense situations, Odysseus is still able to stay calm and focused. If any other ordinary person witnessed the horrible and bloody murder of a close compainion, they would go crazy, but not Odysseus. This is one of the many reasons he is an epic character.

Says: "I'll make the crossing in my own ship, with my own company, and find out what the main land natives are for they may be wild savages and lawless, or hospitable and god fearing men" (Homer 71-74)

Means: This quote is saying that Odysseus is planing on traveling to the Island by himself to see how the cyclopes really acts. He goes to the Island with only 12 of his men because he doesn't want to risk the safety of his men on the ship.

Matters: When he makes this choice, he is being extremely selfless and brave. He doesn't want to get his men hurt in the line of battle. This is one of the many times he is proven to be an epic hero.
