The West was known for its farming. After the Civil War, farming in the West expanded immensely. The West was mainly known for its tobacco, wheat, barley, oats, rice, corn, and veggies. The reason the West was known for its farming was because of its rich soil and large expanses of land.

The North East was known for its factories which produced textiles, shoes, clocks, and hardware. They wanted their products sold so they created a tariff, which put a tax on all foreign goods being sold in the U.S., and this helped expand their economy since more people started buying their products. The money they made from tariffs was used to build roads and canals, which also helped grow their economy. One big issue with the factories and businesses in the North East was the Cult of Domesticity. Women would stay home and raise the children, while the husband would work all day. The Eerie Canal connected the North to the West which was important for trade.

The South was known for its plantations which mainly grew cotton and sugar. The cotton from the South was used in the North Easts factories to make clothes. The South was pro-slavery since the slaves worked on these plantations and were abused by their owners. The South and the North disagreed heavily on slavery and taxation, especially tariffs. South Carolina did not like tariffs since they had to pay higher prices for goods. They rebelled and refused to pay, which caused President Jackson to get involved. President Jackson threatened to have the army come and force them to pay taxes.
