disabled individuals & able-bodied peers~ bridging the gap: my secondary goal (smaller scale) ♿️🏃‍♀️

target:

create program w/ local track and or cross country teams where runners that choose to participate are paired with disabled wheelchair users.

how this will work:

runners will pair with their disabled buddies. they will then run a course pre-checked for accessibility with their disabled buddies, giving their disabled buddies a chance to "run". for their buddies, this will be a special opportunity to run, which may have never been possible for them due to the limitations of their disability or may give them the ability to run free again if they had previously been able too but their disability has taken away that ability.

how I plan to start:

my hope is to begin this program with the local college in my area, Colorado Mesa University. my ultimate goal is to spread this program state & nationwide.

the first step:

I have started by working with my mentor to get connected to a track coach for the college. my hope is to get to meet with the coach & express my ideas, then hopefully come up with a game plan to make this program possible.

possible barriers:

I forsee liability being a possible barrier, but I plan to address this with signed waivers stating that participants and buddies are respinsbile for their own limitations & any medical issues that arise during or as a result of participation are not a responsibility of the college nor program. personally, I believe that as a disabled individual myself, we typically are able to have a good idea of our limitations and therefore I don't forsee this being a huge issue as any disabled person who does not believe this is a safe program for them in consideration to their disability, will not be able to participate for the safety of themselves & their paired runners.

how this pertains to mental health:

as a disabled individual myself, I spend a lot of time in bed & often feel unable to fully enjoy all that life has to offer. I recently was able to go on a walk/jog with a friend in my wheelchair & I felt the happiest I'd been in so long. the breeze, the scenery, and the feeling of running free was everything to me. I think that this program will not only open the eyes of the lack of accessibility in our society & give disabled individuals the ability to enjoy the outdoors and feel the joy of running free of pain & limitations, it will also give their runners a chance to do something good for their peers & help them gain a since of empathy and compassion for disabled indivudals. and hopefully, disabled and able-bodied peers can build friendships that could last a lifetime with each other. people in wheelchairs want to have and enjoy fun just as much as anyone else! and they deserve support, love, and the same opportunities as their able-bodied peers. my hope is for this program to help people with and without disabiiities alike!

the BIG goal 💡

the BIG goal I hope to accomplish or start the process of accomplishing through my fellowship is creating a law, specifically addressing the discrimination & lack of accomodations disabled people continue to face in our inpatient & outpatientent mental health system & supports. my goal is to start this law at the state level in Colorado and someday expand it to the national/federal level. I won't be able to accomplish all this in the short duration of my fellowship, but this fellowship will give me the steppingstones and foundation to allow me to work towards this goal.

the start:

I am beginning by trying to get in contact with a local legislative expert. my hope is to be able to learn the basics of how laws are created & put into order so that I can begin the law creation & proposal process.

the law:

the law I propose will state: "inpatient and outpatient facilities that offer treatment for mental health issues of individuals cannot deny a disabled person admission to their program due to the limitations of their disability based on the criteria that a. Their team of a therapist, psychiatrist/psychiatric nurse or both agree that it is in the best interest of the individual to pursue the treatment and b. The individual themselves agree that they are capable of handling the programming and managing their medical and care needs with their limitations if reasonable accommodations that don’t increase the cost of programming are put into place (ei. Ability to skip groups to rest, dietary restriction adherence etc.). If the treatment is believed to have potential endangerment for the disabled individual due to medical risk and complications (in treatments such as ECT, TMS, etc.), it is required that the doctor/treatment performing professional state the reason for the denial and allow the patient to get a second opinion from either a. A different performing professional within the programming or b. If there is no other professional that performs the treatment within the programming, a referral must be made by the denying professional to a different programming that provides the treatment for a second opinion, if requested by the patient.
