Neutral: A pH of 7 is chemically neutral.

Alkali: instead of closing the cuticle it opens up the cuticle, which makes the hair feel very dry and rough. Alkali ingredients are often used in commercial dyes and bleaches to help apply or remove colours.

Acid mantle: is a very fine acid film on the surface of human skin acting as a barrier to bacteria, viruses and other contaminants that might penetrate the skin

  • Most permanent hair colours are alkaline, when a substance is applied to the hair it opens up the cuticle. With hair colours this allows the mixture to penetrate to the cortex where it can react with the hair pigment to produce a color change. In acid most hair products don't contain strong acids other then penning solutions. An acid closes the cuticle helping the color stay in the cortex longer.
  • a hairdresser can use an alkaline solution if they are applying bleach to a clients hair for example if doing highlights.

    •  3. Alkali solution should not be used if bleach is used to often or mixed to strong it will cause the scales in the cuticle layer to break of which causes permanent damage.

     4. A hairdresser should recommend and use an acid solution when a client has dry and rough hair and can be used with a treatment to get it back to been shiny and soft.

  •  I found the hair was longer when wet as it stretched more.
  • I found the hair broke easier when dry as it was slightly damaged.
  • hair is easier to examine when dry as you can find out what type of density and scalp the client has.
  • The hair is Always darker when wet but the hair itself does not change.

  • my first pH testing was mixing my 30 Vol peroxide and mixing my bleaching powder in a non metallic bowl with my brush and then putting it in to my petri dish to get my pH. my result gave me a pH of 9.this product when used in the hairdressers would penetrate into the cortex of the hair.

    • i then poured my trucurl herbal wave into a second petri dish which gave me a pH of 8.

    • for my 3rd i poured my cool-wear activator 15 Vol straight into another petri dish which gave me a pH of 4.

    • my 4th and 5th was the milkshake shampoo and conditioner which where poured into 2 separate petri dishes which both gave me the same result and was a pH of 5.
