There is More than One Answer

After viewing the video clip on "Changing Educational Paradigms, " I felt energized because this clip exemplifies my views on educational reform. For many years, I've tried to encourage my students to think outside of the box. We do much collaborative work, and I work on helping them understand that there is more than one answer. They must prove their answers with reasonable reasoning, and text information. I, like the author, feel that we are programed to teach a certain way. By learning new strategies, we broaden our horizons to better serve our students. I chuckled at the thought of the industrialized nation, and the metaphor of a school to a production line. Throughout my career, I have fought a resistant staff will presenting materials in different ways, collaborative learning, group discussions, Socratic Circles, sitting on the floor instead of desks, etc. so I can "wake students up, instead of putting them asleep" as the video suggests. I have always been a proponent of change to the educational system. It has not made me popular at school with the union. The active learner that is drawn into the classroom structure will be successful. Many just know how to play the school game. Some of my smartest students don't like to "play school". If we do not find ways to wake them up, they will not be successful in life. More Engagement=Better Retention Rates!
Julie Grimmelsman

A benefit to online learning, is that the discussion board topics can be very interactive in their presentation and can promote students actively to look for the answers on their own, hopefully in a creative way that is in line with their learning style. I believe this promotes the "Divergent Thinking" this TedTalk discusses. One difficulty I've seen in the online format is the heavy reliance on written communication in the online classroom. Not all students, who may be quite bright in other formats, are able to write out their thoughts in an effective way even if they fully understand the concepts they are required to learn.

Caryl: Thank you for posting! I agree that there is an emphasis on text in online courses. That is why web tools like this Padlet or Poll Everywhere may be an easy way to add LCI strategies into your course! Here is a link to a Google Doc that has some additional tools that may spark students interest: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QMVObyC-fjn3QdgsKL7D345ClJHHLAsNtRmupCCvIAE/edit?usp=sharing
