It leverages their success (grade) in an authentic way. They have to find out what a good blog is, so they can create one. Their contributions will become the grade. At the end of the process everyone has a sense of what a good blog is, and a personal sense of ownership of ideas. This is great stuff. I wish all college classes did this! I feel like I can build a better ed blog now.

Students are empowered to see the forest through the trees! I thought this process was so useful for students and I'm imagining that students could use the rubric to generate questions about their own drafts for their peers to response to...for example, "Do my text features support your understanding of the content? How so?" Using the rubric, students could also give much more specific feedback to their peers.
