Have students practice reading, experimenting, and discovering new word usage to expand on vocabulary. By providing students with a safe environment to learn new words, and how they can be applied in context, we are teaching our students to get curious about vocabulary rather than intimidated. Workshops, or activities, based on word study should be a constant and reoccurring activity for literacy development!

Understanding where our students literacy ability is now, helps us better understand what their future goals are and how we, the teachers, can help get them there. When the teacher is constantly assessing literacy, they are documenting and encouraging student progress. Also, assessments help to better determine scaffolding or accommodations for students who may need it the most.
