Security Concern

Restating a concern I have already shared with Dr. Mossige, Ms. Fuller, the PTA, and UEA. Our safety protocol, specifically lock down, seems that it may be ineffective because our classroom doors have large windows that can be easily broken, steal grates that can be kicked out, and outward opening doors that cannot be effectively barricaded.

For those of us with exterior windows in our classrooms, are we encouraged to try to escape through windows in an active shooter situation, or would the act of attempting to break through the window draw unwanted attention to our room?

If a student doesn't get into a class for whatever reason during a lockdown, then they could potentially be locked out with an active shooter. The ADD training may benefit them in such a case. I'd like to explore training students on the ADD system.

Door Hardware & Barricades

Classrooms 170, 172, 174, & 175 (the basement classrooms) did not receive thumb-turn locking door hardware during the last round of campus renovations. This was a critical part of the renovation / security imperatives in the 2008 & 2013 bond programs, but the architect / PM seems to have overlooked these rooms (& maybe other rooms as well). In the event of a security lock-down, we have to walk out into the hallway & lock our doors with keys. Would it be possible to install thumb-turn locks on these doors?

Also, would it be possible for each classroom to have some type of secondary door barricade? Something similar to the “Barracuda Intruder Defense System For Commercial Doors” that can be installed under the door or over the door closers during an emergency situation...?
