The viewer will question how they can relate to this piece, if they have two selves they are living through. Oftentimes the answer to this question is yes, people do have two selves, the one that they present themselves to others with, and one that is who they truly are. This concept allows the viewer to relate and sympathize with the drawing, and hopefully reflect on themselves.

My drawing is two layered photos that are from the same scene in time, which shows how there are multiple versions of people. When I first came to this idea, I looked up double exposure drawings to help myself come up with ideas and details to reference. I started this process by photoshopping these two pictures to layer on top of each other, and then used the grid method to draw and expand the picture onto my final draft. When drawing, I used different pencils depending on the shadows and shading needed for it to be precise and realistic. When looking upon this piece, I want the viewer to know that both people in the drawing are me, just at different times in the same moment.

In my piece I did two things. The first was I posterized a picture of me in photoshop and then drew it using the graph method. I posterized this as it makes it seem more abstract and makes it more kin to who I am on the inside rather than looking realistic. I also put this on a galaxy-like background which I made using acrylic paints. I decided on this background as space is endless, full of mystery and unknown which is similar to our life as we do not really know where we are going. It also symbolizes for me a deep love of science which in a way defines who I am. I ended up cutting out my drawing of me and gluing it onto the galaxy. Overall I really enjoyed how this turned out and feel that it truly represents me beneath the surface though it is simple it represents an abstractness only found within creativity.

My self-portrait displays myself beneath the surface, and what others don’t see about me. I wanted to communicate that I am quiet at first if I don’t know you, but once we create a friendship/relationship I open up and am very fun and outgoing. I started this project by picking out a picture that represents me smiling and happy, then used photoshop to make it black and white, and added a sunset background. After I drew a grid on both pieces of paper and transferred the drawings. My expectation was that the viewer would notice my personality instead of my looks, and they wouldn’t judge on first impressions. They would actually talk to me and then they would see how funny and outgoing I am.

This self portrait drawing describes how I feel I am perceived and what parts of myself I share with the outside world. In the drawing, the light from the tv shows a more detailed picture of who I am on the inside. The tv displays the word caution, as I feel I can be a cautious and guarded person, but once that barrier is taken down, I become more lively and complex (more colorful like in the drawing). I drew myself looking up and out of the television’s ray of light to symbolize how I’m trying to break away from being too reserved.

I didn’t end up referencing any works from specific artists in the creation of my drawing. However, I did look at multiple pictures of post apocalyptic landscapes and old appliances (like the tv) which have a subtle influence on my piece. After sketching the general outline of myself and the surrounding landscape in my drawing, I outlined the main details in pen and then filled in the colorful slice of my drawing with colored pencil and the outside grayscale portions with charcoal.

This drawing expresses what a personality truly means and what it truly consists of. A personality is not based upon what one looks like, it is based upon what one likes and what makes them who they are. A personality comes from beneath the surface, and what's beneath the surface?: your heart! My drawing expresses all the things I love with my whole heart, and truly reflects my personality. The themes I have described connect to the assignment which was a self portrait: beneath the surface. In order to create my drawing I started with photoshop. Photoshop allowed me to create an outline of myself playing soccer using one of my real photos. I then printed this out and scaled it onto a larger sheet of paper. I filled in the outline with everything I love, outlined what I love in black pen, and colored it in with colored pencils. I also used colored pencils to color the soccer field and sky which can be seen in the background. I decided to draw my face because even though it is not under the surface, it is important to love your face, for love comes from beneath the surface.

My drawing is a self portrait that captures a small portion of my identity. I firstly wanted to go with the posterized effect because I like the style, and it matches with my more clean aesthetic that’s actually connected to parts of my personality. I wanted the colors to be cooler and calm, similar to me, and I wanted a blank background so my body stands out.

I was inspired by a poster in the art room, in the same posterized style. First I took a picture of myself with my phone. Then, on Photoshop, I posterized it and turned it into 4 main values. After printing it out, I used the grid method to transfer this image to a much larger piece of paper. Using different colored markers, I then colored in each section to their according value, similar to painting by number. Afterwards, I wanted to add in more humor, so I added a National Geographic border, like in their magazines. Hopefully this adds more humor by contrasting with my serious expression.

Olivia Botta

Painting and drawing

Artist Statement

“The Layers of Me”

This piece of art incorporates many uses of media. The artwork is supposed to give the viewer a better understanding of who I am and what represents me. To do so I emphasized my hair and mouth, then added a colorful background. I added texture, color, and dimension to my hair using yarn. I did this to make it stick out because I believe my hair is one thing that defines me. My hair is my statement piece and I believe it is what people notice about me and will remember me by in the future. I then added red glitter to my lips to make them pop next to my black-and-white face. Only giving my mouth color shows that I have a voice and I make sure to use it. I am also very talkative and friendly, which my mouth represents. Then lastly I added a colorful background with little spots of glitter and salt. The bright colors represent my outgoingness and bubbly nature, and the glitter and salt add a soft, more easygoing, and creative side to me.

There is always going to be another aspect of identity, the one that is held within yourself. This part of my sense of self, and many other peoples, is more complex. It is not necessarily more happy or sad than the part that is expressed to others, but it has more pieces and layers to it. These pieces fit into the puzzle that completes a person and who they truly are. Hopefully this drawing can help to show that there is always more to a person than what meets the eye.

I began this drawing by researching different shadow and reflection drawings, and seeing what would work best to demonstrate the idea that I was trying to express. I then found pictures of myself that I wanted to base my drawing off of, and printed them out. I made a grid on both the printed image, and also my big paper that I would use for the final product. I sketched and filled in my drawing in pencil. Then, I went back and defined lines and shaded, also with pencil, to finish off the artwork.

It also has an important message about the way our world is becoming, and I think that is good.

When I make this sketch into a larger artwork, I can add more shading, and I plan to have more subtle details that have to do with nature destroyed. I might add litter, or a tree falling down, etc. I want to use colored pencils, and pen/pencil to make it.

Morgan McLaughlin

Drawing

Artist Statement

“The Journey Ahead”

This piece explores the feeling of starting a project or a journey that you know will be a challenge. I really love hiking and the outdoors so this picture shows a reflection in the glasses of a mountain that will be a long and difficult adventure. Outside the glasses I used only the black and white scale, the reason I did this was because it makes the glasses pop out more. Also, when you think of a long and difficult journey in front of you it is sometimes hard to find fun and good in it. The colorful glasses represent the rest of my senior year. Although I know it will be difficult, I want to be able to find the color, fun and energy and be able to enjoy my last months at pingree. I used ink and a stylist for this piece. I started off with the gridding technique using a photo reference of myself, then I sketched out the picture on new paper. I used an ink stylist, diluted ink and a brush, a wooden stick and for the background I used water drops and ink then moved the paper up and down to get an interesting pattern.

Evie Cabot

Drawing Tri 1

Artist Statement

“Nature’s reality”

This drawing is meant to express the concept of man vs. nature. It is showing the effect that humans have on the environment, and what the future of the planet looks like. The shadow of a man is representing how humans have an overbearing presence and effect in nature. Though the drawing is not a completely realistic representation of the destruction of nature, it is an accurate portrayal of how human action is affecting our world. Trees are being burned down, because of human’s effect on the environment. The deer is a characterization of the idea of innocence that animals have, how they didn’t ask for their home to be destroyed. Their lives and environment are at stake because of human action. I drew inspiration from images of burning trees on the internet to create this piece. I wanted to have the entire tree be inflamed, to have the leaves themselves be flames. This puts more impact on the drawing and what it represents.

For my drawing, I used an ink pen to draw the outline of the deer and trees, and then used the same pen to fill in the trees. I used 3 different colored pencils to make the flames, in red, orange and yellow. I also used a regular 2b pencil to draw the mountains in the background, and also to outline some of the flames and smudge them. This was to create a smoke-like element within the flames. I used a sharpie to color in the figure of a man, as well as filling in the ground. After I had gotten the basics of all elements of my drawing colored and filled in, I went back and added more flames around the man, and also more depth to the flames in general. This created a more dramatic effect and highlighted the theme of my artwork.

Nicolo Senices

Drawing T1

Artist Statement

“Reaching out”

My artwork was made from the theme of man vs nature. In my piece I have a hand reaching out towards their eyeball. I took this prompt rather literally in which the person's hand and eye are being consumed by nature or in this case the vines and roses. The roses in a way represent bloodshed as not only do they cut you but they are also the same color as blood. The person's bone is exposed in their hand showing that it is a corpse in which the vine has sucked the life out of the hand. I also have vines as a border on the right side and then blood and muscle tissue as a border for the other side. How I went about making this was I drew out the entire thing in pencil and then went over it with a sharpie. Once I did this I colored it in with markers. I also used a white gel pen in order to add some highlights. Overall I am proud of this piece and though it may seem a little gruesome and morbid I do think that this represents my idea of man vs nature in which nature consumes man.

This drawing explores a deeper and symbolic meaning of the terms unplugged and plugged in. The prompt I chose was to express one's interpretation of unplugged. I decided to combine this concept with plugged in to help the viewer more clearly understand what my interpretation of unplugged means. To me, unplugged means that you are disconnected from the world and the people that surround you, leading to a lonely state of mind. This lonely state of mind is shown on the left side of my drawing through a world which is gloomy and dark. The right side of my drawing represents being plugged in, which through my eyes means that you have energy, happiness, and are ready to take on the world. This happy mindset is represented by a positive and fun world. The style in which I chose to represent my positive world was inspired by the drawing style of Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss has a very specific and happy style of drawing which I felt would match perfectly for the world I was trying to represent. Having both worlds of unplugged and plugged in mirror each other was to express truly how much can change when one is connected vs. disconnected to the world. In order to create these two worlds I split my paper using a lightning bolt style. Once one side was drawn I mirrored it onto the other side and used colors to show that they are opposites. I used markers to add the necessary vibes, and added detail through shading and mixing a variety of colors.

My artwork explores the theme of power, I started with a sketchbook design which turned into an expanded drawing. My drawing relates to power because I drew floating islands connected by a stream of water showing that water is the one thing that connects all pieces of land together. Then I drew a dark cloudy figure in the middle of the center island with its hands up in the air indicating that the figure is the one using the water to pull the island back together. I came up with the idea of floating islands but I looked up different images of islands being ripped apart and used that as my inspiration.

I started this artwork by doing a rough drawing of the islands then I slowly shaded in the underground and created little water streams that connected the smaller islands to the bigger one. I then came up with a few different landscape ideas to put on each of the little islands to make them different from each other. Finally after I was finished I went back and colored the land green to make it pop from the background. I want the viewer to realize that power can be represented in different ways it doesn’t have to involve a human being being powerful and strong, it can be portrayed in many unique ways.

Olivia Botta

Drawing Tri 1

Artist Statement

“Effects of man”

This artwork explores the larger concept of man vs nature. Throughout human existence, we have harmed our nature slowly killing our earth. Humans only care about themselves and think we are the main existence and focus on earth, not recognizing everything that keeps us alive and healthy. We cut down so many trees and destroy so many forests to build cities not caring about the effect it has in the long run. Without trees and forests, we wouldn't be here today, and won’t be here in the future. The cracks in the earth represent the effect that man has on nature and the planet as a whole. The man is in all black producing black cracks that will eventually turn into a break in the future. This relates to climate change and how the earth is slowly getting worse and if humans keep doing what they are doing it will create a bigger crack or a “break” killing us in the end. The fire is used to amplify the message and effects we have by stressing the fact that the earth is dying and being destroyed. The man is in space to show that there is so much more out there than just us and humans are not as important as we think we are.

I started this project by looking through the themes we could choose from. I felt that man vs nature spoke to me, especially with everything that is going on with the earth. After taking bio class last year I learned a lot about climate change and the effects humans have on our planet. That inspired me to draw what I did. I started by sketching the man and the earth on a white piece of paper. I then outlined my sketch with a black pen and colored the man with a black colored pencil. The earth was colored with many shades of blue and green creating more dimension to it instead of it all being one color. I then added the fire to the outside of the earth using colored pencils as well. The fire was drawn with red, orange, and yellow all shaded together to make it look like fire. My last step with the earth was to add the cracks with a black Sharpie. After I finished the earth and man drawing I cut them out and added them onto a black piece of paper along with stars to represent outer space. My last step was to outline everything with a white gel pen so the man doesn't get lost in the black piece of paper. I also used the gel pen to draw white stars in the background to give dimension.

The prompt “Inside vs. Outside” led me to this piece, where I draw the inside feelings of people from an outside view. The viewer will hopefully realize that everyone has different thoughts and things going on in others’ minds that are not always shown.

My drawing is a picture of a city landscape printed out in color. I glued on drawings of people that were made by shading pencils. The colored pencil swirls were drawn to represent the feelings that people have inside. Based on the different media, it shows how the outside world is viewed in a very different way than how the inside really is. When others view this art piece, I want them to recognize that this is how the world works, that no one really knows how people truly think and feel.

The original prompt of the piece was “Insider vs Outsider” which are opposites, I thought that I would build on this, having two people both be doing different things, one being in a bright and colorful sunset type of atmosphere, and the other, being dark, cold, and stuck. These two people look the same, and they are the same but different based on how they are presented. At some point in everyone's life, you are both people within this piece. I used a mix of ink and pencil to create this drawing, which is not often my style, but i did want to keep the cartoon type style within the drawing.

We’re all at fault for it to a degree. To make my artwork, I used magazines and maps to piece together a collage background, which has a vignette effect to make the edges slightly darker. I used a liquid glue to individually place each piece. I printed out an image of a bus stop because I wanted there to be contrast between the background and a realistic setting. I also printed out the people and other aspects, but I drew the app icons that serve as the peoples’ heads.

I chose a bus stop because it’s internationally known as a place of waiting.

1. This artwork is my favorite because I really like how the circular shape of the snake and the straight point of the needle work together. I like the symmetry of the sketch and how it’s both subject matter is both serious/thought provoking and also sort of delicate. I also really enjoyed drawing the snake.

2. In this sketch, I’ve already made it so that the needle is sort of impaling the snake, and I’ve changed the shape and position of the snakes tail to be more realistic. I added wings, although I might not keep them in the final drawing. I see myself lining the entire drawing with pen as I have with the head in the sketch. I think I’ll then color the entire drawing using water color in cool tones, maybe making the snake green. I’ll add more detail to the snakes skin and might also fill the empty space that the snake in circles with some type of plant.

I think it was important for me to be able to represent the feeling of wanting to set a goal and travel a long road but understand the certain chaos and beauty that comes with it. This piece represents a lot of things but specifically two. A journey in which you must look to find the beauty around you and overcome hardships, and man's effect on nature. The pictures collaged along the road are there to represent the natural beauty of nature and also represent a road trip or journey on paper. The man vs. nature aspect is the annotated collage pieces. It shows how much effect we have had on nature and either that be in a good way or a bad way.

Cate Pruellage

Drawing T1

Artist Statement

“Serpent Speared”

The overall prompt for this artwork was to expand one of the sketchbook prompts we’d completed earlier in the class into an elevated and polished drawing. For the original sketch, I had combined multiple prompts: Man vs. Nature, Seasons and cycles, and a plant/animal/inanimate object hybrid. During the process of drawing this piece, I also looked to symbolize how we can often stubbornly hold on to things that harm us for a variety of reasons. This can be seen in the snake continuing to stay connected to the needle despite being wounded by it, as well as in the thorny branch it encircles Additionally, I included images of cycles of life and death in the drawing - some examples of which are the snake biting itself in a circle and the red string at the end of the needle.

While I wasn’t inspired by any specific artists or works of art, I did get the idea for this drawing from images/art of snakes in similar circular positions. I also really strived to make this piece appear similar to the simple but symbolic paintings of snakes that might’ve been found in medieval times. To make this artwork, I first created a more detailed sketch of my original sketchbook drawing on a larger piece of paper. From there, I used a light board to trace that sketch onto watercolor paper of a similar size. I then lined my new sketch using thin black pens, and finished by using watercolors to color my drawing. Originally, the drawing only included the snake and the needle, but I ended up adding the thorny branch to fill in empty space.
