Empathy according to the RAE is the ability to identify with someone and share or understand their feelings. This ability is then essential to connect with the experiences and feelings of others. When it comes to people with disabilities, empathy can be especially important in understanding their unique challenges and needs. In order to show empathy towards people with disabilities, it is important to treat them with respect and consideration at all times. This means taking the time to listen to their needs and concerns, and doing everything you can to help them overcome any obstacles they may face, as long as they allow it. Sometimes these disabilities create barriers that make it difficult to have a life with difficulties to participate fully and equally in society. This is where empathy comes in, as it allows us to see beyond these barriers and understand the difficulties disabled people face in their daily lives, allowing us to be more inclusive and welcoming to disabled people. From the lack of accessibility in buildings and public transport to discrimination in employment and education. It is important to recognize that not all disabilities are visible. Many people have invisible disabilities, such as mental health problems that can affect their ability to do certain activities. By recognizing their needs and challenges, we can work together to create a more accessible and inclusive environment.

REFERENCES:

Empatía. (s.f.). Real Academia Española.

Accessibility in cities is an issue of vital importance for people with disabilities. Despite the fact that many cities have implemented measures to improve accessibility, there are still many obstacles that prevent people with disabilities from moving freely around the city. For example, one of the biggest problems is the lack of ramps and elevators in buildings and public transportation. The majority of people with physical disabilities have difficulties mainly when climbing stairs, preventing them from accessing all types of establishments or even urban infrastructure. Another quite common problem in my city, Guadalajara - Jalisco, is the lack of safe and consequently accessible sidewalks. Narrow, dilapidated, steep, and/or non-existent sidewalks can make it difficult for people with visual or physical disabilities to move safely and confidently through the city. In addition, the lack of tactile and auditory signage can also make it difficult for visually impaired people to navigate the streets and all kinds of buildings. This problem or situation is directly linked to the lack of awareness and understanding of the needs of disabled people, this leads to not taking their needs into account when planning, building and designing cities. It is of the utmost importance that cities work to address these issues and improve accessibility for all people, regardless of their disabilities. This is not only a matter of social justice, but also of safety and well-being for all the people who live in a city. With greater awareness of the situation and through action, it is possible to create more inclusive and accessible cities for all.

There are various solutions that can improve accessibility in cities for disabled people. Here are some examples of possible applicable solutions:

Universal design: Universal design is about designing buildings, public transportation, and public spaces so that they are accessible to all people, regardless of their abilities. This may include the installation of ramps, elevators and accessibility devices in buildings and public transport, as well as the use of wider and safer sidewalks.

Implement accessible technology: Technology is vital to improve accessibility in cities. For example, mobile applications can provide information on accessibility in all kinds of aspects, from transport, streets or buildings; while navigation systems can help the visually impaired to move around the city more safely and efficiently.

Promote awareness and education: It is important to raise awareness about the needs and challenges that people with disabilities face. This translates into awareness campaigns and training within the same universities for architects, urban planners and others involved in the planning and construction of cities.

Participation of people with disabilities in urban planning: Participation of people with disabilities in urban planning can help to ensure that their needs are taken into account and cities that are disabled-friendly and accessible are developed.

Regulations and laws for universal design: This ensures that buildings and public services are accessible to all people, including people with disabilities. These accessibility laws will establish as an obligation that ramps, elevators and other aspects of accessibility be installed in buildings, in this way certain accessibility standards will be met.

In summary, there are various solutions to improve accessibility in cities for disabled people. By implementing them we can create more inclusive and accessible cities for all.

In order to implement these solutions, collaboration is decisive. This must be between those in charge of designing cities, that is, architects, urban planners and others, together with the government and, even more importantly, disabled people.... so then a universal design committee should be created including them, in this way disabled people would be included in the root of the solution and the change would be more effective, they would aim to implement universal accessibility in all aspects of the city with different actions through dialogue and conscious planning. Firstly, the needs of disabled people with respect to the accessibility of the city must be taken into account and there is no better way than field visits, that is, a demonstration of the problem. This would help to raise awareness and thus the works of public areas, which are managed by the government and external contractors, should include universal design. Universal design programs and workshops are key to reducing these inequalities experienced by disabled people. These could be implemented in universities in general, but more specifically with construction-related careers. In order to ensure that these actions last and continue to be practiced beyond fixing the current state of the streets or buildings in the city, a mark must be left through awareness, but also reinforce the laws and regulations for construction, where they are applied. It must make it clear that universal accessibility must be present in all designs and constructions, only in this way would it be possible to change the panorama in the short, medium and long term.

To achieve the creation of the committee, there must be an approximation between the disabled people with the government, these then could later achieve the inclusion of urban planners from the city to later work on changes and solutions. Firstly, I think that work should be done to raise awareness of disabled people in educational centers and more focused on architects, civil engineers and urban planners, since these are the future designers of the city, in this way the seeds of change could be sown. in the medium and long term. For a change in the short term, more economic budget would be needed, since it would be about renovating the existing infrastructure of the city with the universal design. Definitely this project would mean a great and important change in the quality of life of disabled people. That is why it is worth the time and effort that the project requires and especially the future for disabled people.
