Salam and greetings to all.

Welcome to the new class of Coastal Planning and Management (VDB4233-Sep 2017).

I'm from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of UTP. I teach final year major elective subjects related to Coastal Engineering. In this field, nothing can separate between classroom learning and field experience. We learn as we walk along the beach :-)

I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience, especially in bringing real examples from the industries. In achieving the most from this class, I encourage you all to participate actively and get engaged in our activities and make full use of the available gadgets and technology.

To me, educators should be enthusiastic facilitator. I don’t see myself as teaching but I facilitate the learning process… in an exciting way (I hope).

Wish you will enjoy my class.

Greetings. I'm Ahmd Faiz Bin Mohd Naim from Civil Engineering department Final year Final Semester. I have a hobby which is travelling. Throughout my travel experience across the globe which include the Europe and Asia, one thing that will always caught my eyes which is the wonder of nature as well as the way that how astonishing it is with all the development that has been done by human being with all the modern technology which allow us to be in the world where we never even think of before. In addition, every time when i went back to Europe, i will always be attracted to see on how they protect their coastal area and how they maintain the area from any damages cause by natural as well as human activity especially in the netherlands, Spain, The UK as well as Indonesia and lot more places. Besides, waves can also be a main source of energy in the future for instance in the UK, in the year of 2020 the will be focusing on how to generate their energy by using waves since the waves in the UK is ideal to produce energy.

My expectation for this course will be focusing on how to be able to enrhance my knowledge on the coastal planning and management and how can we improve our mindset on how we think about coastal engineering. In todays world, most of the people don't really take a serious thought about coastal engineering but within a few years time, people will start to understand on how important it is to have coastal engineers in protecting the coastal region plus the develpment at the coastline area.

I'm looking forward to have a good experience in the class.

Salam and Hi 👋

I'm Afify currently Final Year Final Semester student in Civil Engineering majoring in Ocean and Coastal Engineering. My hometown is at Batu Buruk, Kuala Terengganu which is just a stone's throw away from Pantai Batu Buruk.

Therefore I've seen some coastal structures at my area such as breakwaters, revetments, bulkheads and ports. Currently, there are many projects which are under construction at this area and the most remarkable one is Kuala Terengganu City Center Drawbridge with 632m length and 23m width. Seeing all these projects encourage me to learn more about coastal and having an experience lecturer like AP Mus is such a blessing 💝.

My expectation is to gain as much as knowledge in this area of study. #cliche

Learning in class would be more exciting if we can have more sharing on the real case study for coastal area related problems (simulation or experimental results) or any software used in designing and planning the coastal projects.

Regards,
El Afify

Omar Haziq B Zailani Hola!! I am Omar, Final Year First semester and lives in Shah Alam, Selangor. To be honest, coastal engineering never be thought in my mind. I am always go to the beach and see the seashore is getting sick day by day. The erosion and flooding issues are just like a common problem in Malaysia. That is the reason why I choose this major in civil engineering. So, my expectation for this course, eventually all the knowledge and important information regarding to the coastal planning and management would be at the end of our fingertips as we can always have discussed and solved various problems exposed in the field-trip or even in the class. Outdoor activities, for example a field trip to the any coast in Malaysia would be a great exposure and more experience acquired for future endurances in real working life. Gracias people!

The reason I choose coastal as major is because there's once I follow my dad go to his site at bintulu similajau there . The project are building new port for bintulu . There I see how they construct the breakwater , position it in water and etc. I think this is interesting. This is so different from normal contruction works. And therefore trigger my interest regarding coastal engineering. What I expect from this course would be knowledge that are applicable. I would love to know the purpose of each knowledge and how it's going be use in future industry. That would be another way to trigger my curiousity in the subject. And of course a industry visit/ beach visit would be good cause so far my batch being deny numerous time of field trip :(

Hola amigo. I'm Sakinah from Perak, currently in final year first semester.

I never realized how much I am amazed by physics behind water until my call for internship is coming. I have been involved in coastal numerical modelling, some coastal structure design and site supervision on land reclamation project. I am inspired by coastal engineer that I have met. On that moment I realized, I should fulfil my destiny in coastal engineering even though I have dreaming of becoming structural engineer. But I know I make a right choice, I love water, it make me calmer... and sometimes wiser, that is what I called 'wave effect'.

I have no expectation to the course, I just hope to gain as much as possible and understand better, not for myself but for betterment of all.

I think to introduce physical modelling and numerical modelling in the learning process would be a good platform to make us appreciate coastal process.

Thank you ✌

Sir painted quite a good picture on how unpredictable and complicated the coast can be. Wind, wave, current, tide, biological processes, and interaction of all the other elements made coastal engineering very challenging.

What I expected the most is of course we can go to a nice beach together and get down-to-earth experience of what we are studying. Like getting the fishermen 'feel' of the coastal processes and understanding them from different perspectives etc. I'm looking forward to it. =D

And of course the practical stuffs like deeper understanding of design codes, important authority guidelines, and solution to case studies.

Asalamualaikum and Hi. My name is Taufik from Sabah. In context of picking major, I was in dilemma between offshore and coastal. However, I attended a talk related to coastal major in 3rd year 2nd semester which at least give me more big picture of the major. Honestly during the first class of CPM I felt confused since I have very less idea on most of the terms mentioned by AP that I had to google most of them and thinking that maybe i'm not belong to this major, until I knew that Appendix A exists.

For now Alhamdulillah I feel quite comfortable with this subject. I just need to struggle a little bit more than some other subjects.

My hope for this subject is of course, a field trip. I heard that the flaw of our existing field trip is that students don't really get the actual objective of it and focus 100% on the excitement. If possible, I would like to prepare a paperwork on the fieldtrip inclusive of the proposal and report (of course with help of other students) so that everyone can aware that the fieldtrip is part of study, with excitement involvement.

Conclusion: Please, field trip. 🙏🏼

Photo: Bohey Dulang, Semporna, Sabah.

We're all dying to have a field trip but rather than a whole class going to the same place I would suggest we split and go to different places and maybe later on when we're back in class we can share the things that we've learned from each places. In this case students will be more determined while they're in a field trip.

Hello everyone :) I am Jun Jie from Sungai Petani, Kedah. Currently in my final year first semester. The reason I am taking coastal engineeeing as my major Ian because I have deep interest when's it is related to water, rivers and oceans. Besides that, I think this field will have a good future as cities like Penang island and Singapore Ian running out of land, thus land reclamation will be useful.

What I expect from this course? I wish to have a deep understanding on the fundamental knowledge so that I can utilize the knowledge well. I also hope the knowledge and skills that I have learned is useful for my future career.

I really like how AP Mus deliver the knowledge in class with lots of real life cases. With the use of email and whatsapp, we also can learn anytime and anywhere, not only in the class. Thank you. :)

Besides, frankly it is hard to imagine those coastal structures and their effects purely with the words on lecture slides and some pictures of them, if there is a field trip, it will enhance our knowledge and have a better understanding on these structures.
Also, activities like the current assignment and project will be a good platform for us to apply what we have learnt, and to look for additional information by ourselves.

Assalamualaikum and helloooooooooo everyone!! 😊

I'm Hafizul.
I'm from Terengganu.
I'm in final year final sem (yay!).

To be honest, I love beaches so much! Lying on the sand, wind sweeping through my hair, serene sound of swashes, ahhh, PARADISE.

Alhamdulillah, I had no personal conflict in choosing Coastal as my major since of course, due to my passion towards beaches. I believe when I take learning personal, the fun in it would be as much as the sand on the beach. 😉.

Now let's get to a more technical part. I chose coastal because I want to give appreciation to the surroundings that I grew up in. I noticed that as I the years pass by, significant changes had occur to my beloved beaches. I WANT TO KNOW WHY! I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH IT!

Hence, I believe this path that I have chosen can lead me to finding my answers to solve not only my own personal dispute but certainly other people who thinks like me.

Few suggestions that I can give are:
- Field trips! Yay!
- Simulation of waves to show how erosion occur with presence of coastal structure.
- A clear structure of our syllabus.

With that, I thank you.
*Mic drop*

My name is Samantha and I'm from Miri, Sarawak. At present, I'm based in Kuala Lumpur and also juggling between the first semester of my final year and trying to maintain my sanity.

For as long as I can remember, I've always had this oddly reminiscent relationship with the coast- it signified my entire childhood growing up there :D. Yes, I grew up playing in the Luak Bay beach every weekend in Miri- you could say that Miri was pretty small and there was nothing much going on in that sleepy part of town. About 12 years ago, my family and I got a break from the coast and decided to live in the city of Kuala Lumpur instead. Who knew I would once again return to familiar grounds; it felt more like this was meant to be.

My expectations would revolve around being able to grasp a clearer picture and understanding of what this major is about. The coast and beaches are something travelers and every nation's tourism sector rave about but there aren't as many awareness of ongoing problems experienced in the coast/beaches. If we continue on this path and choose to just be ignorant, the coast and beaches might only exist in history classes.

I actually do appreciate the unique teaching-learning approach practiced in class; it's rather interactive and probably the most uplifting interaction I've ever experienced in my 4 years in UTP *laughs* The only suggestion that I hope you'd include in our future classes would probably be a visual representation (video/simulation) of the erosion/sedimentation/LSD.

That's it and thank you :D

Greetings and hello to everyone! I am Faiz Hashemi a.k.a Shemi for short. A local boy here, from Selangor, but has been staying in Perak for most of my life :D

Will be finishing my bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering at UTP, currently in Final Year Final Semester and of course, has chosen to major in Coastal Engineering!

From my point of view, by the end of this CPM course, I really hope that I will be able to learn and explore more on the natural processes in and around the coastal area. Throughout the brief beginning of the lectures of this CPM course (DCS as well :D), I can already tell that my expectation will not end up in disappointment. My gratitude fully goes to AP Mus for making the lectures in class to be very interesting by teaching through his experiences in the industry. Unlike most of the courses that I have taken, the classes will always focus more on theoretical knowledge in which you cannot see and imagine what is really happening in real life.

I am sure that this is the best way to teach us in grasping the knowledge with much more understanding, which in turn, will help us in our way to become a successful engineer in the near future!

Thanks!
