This incident happened when I was 20 years old.

It was evening, my class hours came to an end, and I had no more classes that day. I decided to call it a day and go back to my apartment to rest. I was on my way back from my campus, it was a peaceful, that is until I felt someone following me. I suddenly had a strange feeling in my stomach, but that time I thought nothing of it and brushed it off. That is until that feeling kept lurking inside my stomach and I decided to turn around. All I saw was a circle friend group from my campus, so I felt a bit relieved and continued walking. I walked for around 2 minutes and felt that strange feeling again. I turned around and no one was there, I got chills running down my spine and ran as fast as I can to my apartment building and closed the front entrance to the building. Thank goodness the front entrance can only be opened by a specific codenumber from each apartment unit. I went up to my unit on the 15 floor and took a rest, hoping tomorrow everything goes well.

Boy I was wrong!. The next day I woke up and I made breakfast. While waiting for my breakfast to cooldown, I went downstairs to my post box to check if I have any mail. I took all my mails and went back to my unit. I ate my breakfast while going through my mails, until one mail stood out to me, it looked a bit disheveled. I opened that mail, and inside was photos of me in my regular Cafe, in the campus, and in the study room. Those photos looked like they were taken in secret. I got creeped out that I lost my appetite. Suddenly the memories of last night came back to me and I got worried. I contacted my friend Lora to pick me up at my apartment today with her car, because I was too scared. I told Lora everything about last night and this morning. Lora told me to report it to the police, and that she'll drive me to my campus every morning until this case is resolved.

When it comes to cultural traditions that make you stop and say, “Wait, what?”, Maluku’s Bambu Gila ritual takes the prize. Translated to “Crazy Bamboo,” this ritual is exactly what it sounds like: a bamboo pole that goes absolutely loco with the help of a shaman, some incense, and what we can only describe as supernatural caffeine. But beyond the spectacle of a bamboo stick throwing a tantrum, this ritual holds a deeper meaning that connects people, spirits, and the unbreakable bonds of teamwork.

Normally, bamboo is a chill plant. It sways in the wind, grows tall and strong, and does its best to mind its own business. But during Bambu Gila, it’s as if the bamboo decides it’s had enough of being passive and wants to show the world its wild side. With the shaman’s chants, the bamboo becomes possessed and starts moving like a toddler on a sugar high. Strong men grab onto it, trying to keep it under control, but the bamboo has other plans. It jerks, twists, and pulls them along as if it’s saying, “You’re not the boss of me!”.

What makes this ritual even more fascinating is the deeper cultural context. Bambu Gila is not just about showing off a possessed bamboo stick; it’s a symbolic act that embodies unity and collaboration. The group effort required to tame the bamboo is a reminder that life’s challenges—whether supernatural or not—are easier to handle when tackled together. Of course, we can’t ignore the humor in watching grown men struggle to control a stick of bamboo that seems to have a mind of its own. It’s chaotic, it’s unpredictable, and it’s wildly entertaining.

Bambu Gila isn’t just a quirky ritual, it’s a celebration of community, culture, and the mysterious forces that connect us all. Whether you see it as a spiritual experience, a test of teamwork, or just a wild show, Bambu Gila reminds us that sometimes, going a little crazy is part of the fun.
