I like using discussions for students to share their world and how it connects to the learning goal with students around them. One example I've seen is students taking pictures of geometric shapes they find in their home, identifying them, and posting to the group for others to see. I also have seen them used for practicing grammar in context. Let's say you want students to work on using descriptive words, and also proper punctuation. Post an interesting image, and ask students to write about it - using descriptive words and minding their punctuation. You can even deliver these instructions using video. You can set the discussion so students can't see each others post until they post their own, or you can allow them to see right away if some students would benefit from modeling. In 1st grade, I've seen this used in that way, however student were just learning how to log in, so every student logged in using the same account. Post exemplary student work the way you would use a bulletin board. We have an art teacher that uses Schoology exclusively for posting the students' art work so the parents can see it if it is too fragile to transport home.

Create assignments  so that you can leave text/audio/video assignment feedback. Students will be able to view the feedback from a device and parents can watch the feedback too.

Use your Schoology  course homepage as a "Launch Pad" for any digital work that students are doing. Teachers can work with students to always start their digital day (whether in a computer, through carts of devices, or one-to-one) by logging into Schoology. Any links to other web applications that students will be using can be linked off the Schoology course homepage.

Have bonus assignments ready for students who are ahead or finish work early. These assignments can be pre-made in Schoology and the teachers can assign them to students on-the-fly as needed. You could also use this for remediation of key concepts. Many teachers in our District have a device station in their classrooms for this purpose.

Post copies of instructions/worksheets/handouts for parents to print out in case the student loses their work on the way home.
