My Cabin

Right when you step foot on the uneven soil you breathe in the fresh air of pine trees surrounding you. Making your way up the paint peeled deck to lift the bear boards with it creaking every step you take. You finally make it to the door with a sign welcoming you to the cabin “take a deep breath you made it to the cabin.” the screen door creaks open to a bright purple door leading you into the one-roomed cabin. “SLAM” the screen door shuts behind you with great force you feel the chill all around the cabin, feeling as if it hasn't been lived in before. The cold winter isolated the cabin from us but right when spring comes it is welcomed by children ready to spend every hour in the forest exploring the unknown and only coming in when their bellies rumble to scavenger the cabinets to find what little food that has not expired. With any luck, there would be hot dogs to make some bacon cheese dogs. The fire ignites with no hesitation on the dry soil with some help of sticks and pine needles; it crackles and pops when the wind sweeps it into another direction. The small trail of smoke sweeps right into our faces burning our eyes forcing us to turn away and risking our dogs to slip off the stick. The day is never done till the sun goes down and the animals come out. Just when the sun decides to wake the birds start singing, the chipmunks steering, the wind whispering through the trees, the animals waking to get a drink and hearing their feet crunch on the forest floor. The fresh air makes you shiver as you rap up in a blanket and enjoy the nature that surrounds you. There's never a dull moment in the presence of nature.

Off in the distance you can hear a woodpecker humming and drumming ever so loud. As you Sit and listen, touch and smell you see off in the distance a deer mighty and proud.

Due to recent events, I am no longer able to go visit Boulder, Colorado. I miss this place a lot from the caring community to the enthusiastic look on college students' faces when they protest. Because of the wide-open hiking spots and the non-judgmental progressive population, the atmosphere in Boulder makes people feel free. Even in your darkest times it still feels like you are getting a big hug that will never end. Even with the environment being comforting and relaxing, you still hear people giggling and going crazy. The pearl street mall is a great example of this, masses of different types of street performers are drawn to this outdoor shopping area. From singing to crawling in a box, you can always expect a crowd of friendly extroverts clapping and cheering the performers on. Boulder is not just filled with college students and shopping however, there are also many places to eat unique cuisine. The taste of fresh basil and juicy plump peaches leaves your mouth watering every time you eat there. I don't think there is a better place to clear your mind. The air is so clean and soft that even taking a deep breath is a life-changing experience. Breathing the air there is so unique because you can smell the green grass, cherry blossom trees and the drops of water on the leaves from the rain the night before. Boulder has always been special to me because it makes you feel like you're not alone. Boulder is a great place to visit if you have not already and an even better place to live if you ever get the chance.

I love Manitou Springs. I love the old timey vintage feeling, seeing the Victorian houses, and the walk in shops. Whenever we go there, I always hear families and friends laughing. There’s an area where there are 50 cent rides for young children and they sell cotton candy and ice cream there. We always get ice cream in Manitou Springs, but it’s better than store bought! I tend to smell burgers and funnel cakes in Manitou. I feel an intangible feeling that is safe. That is why I love Manitou Springs.

The leaves settled after the wind blew through them. Old and dirty toy shovels scattered across the dirt. A train laying on its horn as it zips past the fence. The force pulls leaves a couple feet to the side. A small flood ditch for when the rain got heavy was filled a fourth of the way with “berries” and old crunchy leaves. The dirt was always soft, many stick prints were scattered across it. Small ditches less than an inch deep had been created by hands pushing into the dirt and pulling out large clumps of it. Heavy walls of bushes as well as trees blocked the area from being visible to those on the other side. The smell of tree bark and damp dirt was so overpowering after rainfall, to the point where it could be tasted. Unknown to many, it created a nice opening to sit alone and watch the train pass at noon, every other day.

Seeing the beautiful sight of the mountains towering over the city and smelling the fresh fall air was wonderful. We continue to go there still to hear the sound of dogs barking and playing, feeling the fresh breeze, and to bring food to eat with my family at the picnic tables scattered all across the trail. In my old town in New York my family and I would always go on hikes, so when we moved out here the opportunity of going out everyday and walking made us feel at home and helped us adjust so much better.

After a rocky and bumpy drive up gold camp road, there is an area where we stop. It's a little viewpoint. There are usually little or no people there. We go there when it gets dark, so we can see the stars, and all the city lights. We sit in the back of the truck, which smells like it newly dropped off dirt somewhere and we have blankets and pillows which are soft and fuzzy. We hear the birds go to bed, rustling the trees, and we hear crickets chirping, and sometimes, we hear the crunching of the dirt and rock of somebody driving or walking nearby. On all sides except in front of us is forest, and on the right side are big rocks.it is a gravel/ dirt road, and parking area with a about 45 degree drop in front of us.

We've only been twice, tried a third time, but it was muddy and a truck transporting hay to the farm near the viewpoint got stuck and there was traffic. It was still beautiful, with the stars out. We heard the typical things, like the crickets and the birds, just with more cars and the men working to get the truck moving. We had chips and soda with us this time. We had bubbly and sweet sprites, with the crunch and salty bbq chips.

When I go to this place, I relax, and really get a beautiful view of the city.

My family and I adore going to the zoo. When we arrive at the zoo the first animals we see are the giraffes. They have beautiful coats of fur. The combination of brown and tan makes them stand out. They are truly adorable creatures. After the giraffes we walk down the long path to the elephants, I run my hand along the cold metal rods, leading to the elephants, and a chill from the cold rod runs through my hand. As we open the doors to the elephants exhibit, a strong earthy smell is carried through the air. The elephants grey leather like skin and unique sounds make them one of my favorites. On our way back up the long path we get to the end and we visit the lions. Sometimes we can get lucky enough to hear their roar. My mom says it sounds like a roar through a megaphone. At the end of our zoo trip we sit down on a park bench and enjoy a funnel cake. The taste of the powder sugar and fried cake batter is a well known treat to my family and I. Going to zoos is one of my family's favorite things to do and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is no exception.

When I go there it is like going on vacation. But there are also some negatives about the park like hearing people slide and I hear the squeak. When I usually get to the park the sight of seeing it is just great, the people that are excited to skate, and some people are mad because they did not land their trick. Sometimes I fall and it's a bad fall. Like on my face I can almost taste the dry concrete. I can feel the pebbles scraping on the bottom of my hands. How the wind breezes through the trees with the lightest blow and how the branches wave and brush each other so lightly with the sound of laughter from the ones I love. With just the start of spring easing behind us and the colder weather heading back north of us. But the taste of the evaporated melting snow on the tip of our tongues but there ever so slightly. In the distant background is a moderate roar from the car infested highway, it’s slight but there. To my left is a sign that states New Santa Fe Regional Trail and every few meters there remains from past areas and buildings. As the sun goes down, the warmth gets cooler. We pack up and head to the comfort of home with the knowledge of an amazing night, the moon rises and the stars crowd around as we gather for a blissful dinner. Tomorrow is a whole new day to spend with the ones I love once more.

While driving up the windy, narrow 19-mile two way road you try to urge yourself not to look at the magnificent view the higher you get. Once you exit your car you can immediately feel the air nipping at your skin as the slight breeze snakes its way through your hair. As the shuttles bring you the rest of the way up you can’t help but marvel at the view over Rampart Range, North and South Catamount Reservoirs, Crystal Reservoir, and if you turn a little you’ll be able to see the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The scent of beautifully baked goodies hits your nose suddenly making your tummy rumble so you take a stroll over to the building housing the delectable foods. Opening the door you get hit with a wave of warmth but also the sound of happy visitors enjoying their world-famous donuts 14,000 feet up. The donuts, all fried and delicious, are one of the many reasons people visit and once the new building is finished more and more people will be enjoying the construction all done and gone.

One place in Colorado that’s special to me is Blodgett Peak. It’s special to me because it’s a good place to mountain bike and get out of the house. I live within walking distance of the mountain and go there often. I love to see the wildlife and flowers there. The trees are always in the perfect spot which makes the place look beautiful and calming. The air always smells fresh and rejuvenating like you’re getting energy from the air. While you’re walking along a trail you hear all sorts of things like the wind and birds. To me, I sometimes feel like going to Blodgett to clear my head. The sounds take you somewhere else if you close your eyes. Since Blodgett peak is a mountain, some trails can be steep. Sometimes you have to grab a coarse tree trunk to help you get up the trail. When I’m biking I will sometimes fall if I take the wrong line. The dirt feels grainy while smooth. There are also quite a few rocks there as well. Blodgett is special to me because it gives me a chance to get out of the house while experiencing nature.

A place in Colorado that is special to me is Grand Lake. Grand Lake is special to me because it is the first place I visited when I moved to Colorado, it has a beautiful lake, and lastly the wildlife is incredible.

When I moved to Colorado the first place I visited was Grand Lake for father’s day. We went with some family friends and rented an airbnb right next to them. The house we rented was on the lake and it was so beautiful waking up to that view. When we were not on the lake we were in the town walking around and eating dinner. One night for dinner we stopped by a restaurant that was surrounded by nothing except for the beautiful forest. At that restaurant we ate cheeseburgers and fries and it was delicious.

Another reason why Grand Lake is special to me is the Lake, after all it wouldn't be named Grand Lake without the lake. In the past I have lived in California and Florida, I have never lived somewhere without the ocean until I moved to Colorado; so it's a little bit of home. Listening to the calm flow of the water and smelling the fresh water air. My favorite part of the lake is going on the boat and spending the whole day there. Unfortunately the water was freezing cold so it wasnt so fun going in but I still did for a little bit.

The wildlife in Grand Lake is phenomenal! The first time I saw a moose was there and they were everywhere. I remember when we were walking in the night time I was scared to be out there for too long because of the wolves which I had heard howling the night before. On our drive up to rocky national forest we saw lots of different animals and I wish I could have pet them but that's very dangerous. When I jumped into the lake I felt a school of fish under my feet and it tickled me.

In conclusion Grand Lake is the most special place to me in Colorado because of the lake, the wildlife and the memories.

My favorite place to be in Colorado is on top of Pikes Peak. It is a very quiet and calming place. The cold sends shivers down my spine and I can feel the piercing wind against my cheeks. It smells very fresh like ice water in summer, only fresher. The adoring view is definitely one to remember. Looking from the top of Pikes Peak makes me feel free as if all the stress has lifted away. As a stand on the edge, I can hear the chirping of birds that I hadn’t heard before. I can hear indistinct conversations. The taste of snowflakes on the mountain tase almost fresher than the ones below. This place makes me feel calm, zen, and free.

When I went to Pikes Peak, it was 2016 when the cog was still running. But it was just like I imagined. It was very peaceful and overall just a great place. I went up with my cousins and I remember tasting a coffee lollipop for the first time, and it was actually pretty disgusting, but we all hated it so it was ok. It was one of the most memorable moments that I’ve ever had in my life.

There are a lot of pretty places in Colorado, but undoubtedly my favorite place to go is Eleven Mile Lake. There is an area there with rocks only a little under the water, and the boulders go out far into the lake. I like walking on the rocks to feel the cold water rushing over my feet. There is even soft sand to sink into while watching small waves crash into stones. The air is fresh and clear there, sometimes cold, which is nice when the sun feels overbearing. It’s hard to describe exactly, but everything there smells earthy. It smells like sand and dirt, but when I sit on the cliffs there it smells more like salt and fresh fish.

At Eleven Mile Lake, there is long grass in some places there, so when the wind blows I can hear grass flapping and getting tangled together. In the afternoon it gets really quiet. There really isn’t any wind so there aren’t many waves near evening. That’s my favorite time of day at the lake because all I can hear there is the occasional swish of water from fish or sudden movements in the lake. The air is so natural and fresh there that breathing it in gives off an oddly good taste in your mouth. It tastes clean and pure, and even refreshing. It’s like drinking freezing cold water and feeling it go down your throat. Out of everything I have talked about so far, my utmost favorite part of Eleven Mile Lake is its sunsets. The sky turns yellow and reflects onto the water. The sun gets so bright and it's absolutely mesmerizing to watch. There are many places I like to visit in Colorado, but none of them are as great as that lake.

When I close my eyes and think of this place the first thing that happens in my mind is I hear the sound of the robins chirping and the Waterfall Running, as I take a deep breath in I can smell the fresh pollen in the air. Then when I reach out I can feel course tree bark and prickly pine needles with gravel beneath my feet, and I can taste the fresh mountain air. When I finally open my eyes I can see the most elegant of trees surrounding a waterfall with beautiful flower thriving under the trees and the birds flying over them, all of this in a small place called Betty Fords garden located in Vail.

When you are firing there you can smell the burnt gunpowder. Open your mouth for a second and you can taste the ashes. There are constant gunshots everywhere and hear the clink of the casing as it lands on the concrete floors. Feel the cold bullets as you load them but the heat and recoil when you fire. See the holes in your target develop more and more the more you unload into it. Magnum Shooting Center is my favorite place in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Due to the text talking about buying canned things and a shot, I’m assuming that some sort of pandemic or virus is happening during the time. Firstly, in the book, it says “...all they’d purchased was bags and bags full of canned fruit and dehydrated meat substitute.” (Bethany Wiggins, Stung p.77) This illustrates that there was a reason for them to only be buying goods that won’t expire for a long while. I also believe there was a virus because also on page 77 of Stung, it describes Fiona getting a shot. “I remember the sharp poke of a needle, hardly bigger than the tip of a pencil...” This quote implies that there is a reason, unknown to the reader, that Fiona is getting a shot. I don’t believe the quote would have been added to the book if there wasn’t a bigger reason as to why it would be important. To sum everything up, I think that there was a pandemic or sickness going on during Fiona’s flashback.

While reading Stung by Bethany Wiggins, readers might believe that bees were spreading a harmful disease and that humans were trying to protect themselves from it. Fiona remembers, “Wearing clothes to school that covered me from my neck to my fingertips to my toes, with a hat draped in bee sting-resistant netting over my head like a veil.” This suggests that the bees were harmful because she was wearing clothes and a veil so that the bees couldn’t sting her. Fiona also remembers that “...every month when Jonah and I went to the health clinic to get another shot,...” Normally people don’t get shots every month leading the reader to think that there was some kind of disease caused by the bee stings that the monthly shots prevented. Based on the book Stung, readers can come to the conclusion that bees were spreading a harmful disease based on what they wore and that they received shots every month. This shows the importance of wearing protective clothing and the use of vaccinations to prevent disease, which is especially relevant in the world today.

I think at this time the world is experiencing a deadly virus carried by bees, which are going extinct, and people can't eat normal food, because it may be contaminated by the bees who are still alive and carry the virus. In chapter 3 it quotes “Bees pollinate a huge percent of the world's crops. If bees die out, things like apples and peaches and vegetables will die. Lots of plants will die without bees pollinating them. And if plants start dying, then the things that eat plants will start to die, like cows and chickens, which means no more meat for us to eat. If we have no fruits or vegetables to eat, and no means, our world will experience a major famine. People will start starving to death worldwide.” This is what I think is happening, because Fiona remembers her mom and her sister coming home from the grocery store with canned food, substituted fruits and meat. The bees might have gone extinct or deadly if they resort to fake food. Also I think that the bees who haven't died carry a deadly virus were if you get stung by them it transfers to you, that's why when Fiona and her family go out they wear bee resistant veils. In conclusion I think that Fiona's world is experiencing a deadly bee virus and its been going on for so long that people are turning into mindless beasts. Its important this book mentions that quote in chapter 3, because it could be how our real world will turn out in a short amount of time.

From this quote, I can infer that whatever virus was going around was most likely spread through the air very easily. “Being forbidden to go outside.” This quote from page 77 makes me believe that eventually, the virus got so bad the people were unable to go outside without catching the virus because of how contagious it was. This evidence proves that there was some sort of highly contagious virus going on at the time.

Demonstrated through Fiona’s clothing and food preservation, she had to maintain her lifestyle through this strange and unremembered time in her life. First, it lists the clothes she wore during this event. On page 77, it said that she wore “...clothes to school that covered me from my neck to my fingertips to my toes, with a hat draped in bee sting-resistant netting over my head like a veil”. This is important because it shows how protective she was of her skin at this time because of the bee apocalypse. Secondly, it described the quantity and type of foods her family bought from the grocery store. On page 77 also, it said, “...all they'd purchased were bags and bags and bags full of canned fruit and dehydrated meat substitute”. This is important because it shows how they obtained and preserved their food sources so bees couldn’t get it. Fiona’s lifestyle was maintained during this strange and unremembered time in her life through her clothing and her food preservatives which also shows how we can end up today during the COVID-19 outbreak.

During this time, bees were overpopulating and taking over neighborhoods, forcing people to protect themselves from the stings as they are carrying a disease. On page 77 of Stung by Bethany Wiggins, Fiona remembers herself walking to school “...with a hat that draped bee sting-resistant netting over my head like a veil.” This explains further that bees are carrying some sort of disease or virus that people are being protected and quarantined from. She watches out of her window and sees “... Mom and Liz coming home from the grocery store wearing their netting veils, and all they’d purchased was bags and bags and bags full of canned fruit and dehydrated meat substitute.” (pg. 77 Stung) Her family is preparing to be locked down and kept inside for a while. Fiona’s family doesn’t know when this virus will diminish and the lock down will end, so they prepare for a large amount of time. Bees flood everywhere, spreading the virus further as more people might be staying outside.
