Both Scene 2 and scene 5 are about the same thing, Romeo leaving Juliet at her balcony, but both have very contrasting tones. In scene 2 they have just met and immediately fall in love while being in an almost blissful bubble, without caring about any consequences. However, in scene 5 there is a very sorrowful mood because Romeo and Juliet had to come back to reality and realized there relationship is causing many issues.

These two balcony scenes essentially have the same overarching theme; the unsatisfaction Romeo and Juliet have when they are separated and the yearning to always be together. However, the emotions that these two characters convey through their dialogues are drastically different. In Act II, Scene 2, Romeo and Juliet are deeply in love with each other on the first night that they meet. When Romeo has to leave Juliet that night, she does not want him to leave, because the little time they had to be together was too short. They did not care about the feud between their families, they simply wanted to be together. While in Act III, Scene 5, Romeo and Juliet are faced with painful fact that they would have to be eternally separated, due to Romeo’s banishment. Their giddy love-clouded feelings from the previous balcony scene are nowhere to be found. Now, the feelings of dread and sorrow were demonstrated as the beauty of their relationship disappeared with Romeo as he descended. -Nicolette
