Prior to this attack, the United States was feeling neutral about joining the war, and did not want to get very involved. Afterwards, the United States government sympathised with Britain and decided to to become allies in the war. Germany was concerned because they saw this as a great danger, slightly reduced the number of it's U-boat operations.

Germany felt threatened by Great Britain's army and decided to do what they could to protect their country. They were experimenting with new technology and turned to use their newest creation, submarines. They began attacking merchant vessels, to stop the deliveries of weapons and food that would lead to help the other assist the enemy. Germany warned Great Britain that these attacks would occur if any ship crossed the lines into the war zone.

As the passenger ship continued it's journey to deliver, they began to receive radio transmissions that a threatening submarine was in the area. Even though they could detect enemy U-boats in the area, they continued on with their mission. While the German attack submarines were 2,300 feet under water, they launched a torpedo at the ship. This created a large explosion at the side of the boat, ripping off important pieces that protected the inside, and kept the water from getting inside.
It took 18 minutes for what was seen as the jewel of British vessels to sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Even though there was an inspection to check if there were any weapons on the liner, it was later proved that the passenger ship was carrying 4,200 loaded cases of small arms ammunition, and 1,250 shrapnel cases. Due to the excessive amount of ammunition, this could have been a significant factor on why the vessel sunk so rapidly.
