Altruistic

Walter to Travis: “Just tell me where you want to go to school and you’ll go. Just tell me, what it is you want to be—and you’ll be it…Whatever you want to be—Yessir! You just name it, son… and I hand you the world!” p. 108 Walter is altruistic because he tries his best to give his family a better life even thought the odds are stacked against him.

Bitter

“Mama, a job? I open and close car doors all day long. I drive a man around in his limousine and I say, ‘Yes, sir; no, sir; very good, sir; shall I take the Drive, sir?’ Mama, that ain’t no kind of job… that ain’t nothing at all.” P. 73 Walter is bitter because all he really does is complain to his family about how unhappy he his with his life and how nothing gets better for him.

Walter is a stubborn man, although he's stubborn his perseverance to create a better life for him and his family makes him some what honorable. Walter works as a personal driver for rich people but he has dreams of owning his own business and putting his family in a better position financially. The only problem is that society is against him and he has nothing to start him off or anything to bring to the table and this tears him down because he wants to be able to provide and do more for his family but he can't because he's not financially stable.

"Yet if hope has flown away in a night, or in a day, in a vision , or in none, is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream."

This poem relates to Walter because Walter has dreams of owning his own business (liquor store) but he thinks his dreams are diminishing because he doesn't have the money to put up and he slowly begins to give up and lose hope because he then thinks his dream isn't going to come true.

These lyrics relate to Walter because nobody believes in him when it comes to him owning the liquor store so they aren't with him but they say they are . He has to keep his head up and do what he has to do, to get to that bag (money) so his family can live right financially.

A theme would be Dreams vs. Reality. Walter to Mama: “What you need me to say you done right for? You the head of this family. You run our lives like you want to. It was your money and you did what you wanted with it. So what you need me to say it was all right for? So you butchered up a dream of mine—you—who always talking ‘bout your children’s dreams.” P. 94,95

This quote from the book relates to the theme because Mama is trying to tell Walter to be more realistic with his dreams. She thinks his dream of running a liquor store isn't a guaranteed thing. Walter thinks that Mama is just trying to kill his dreams when really she just doesn't want to spend the money that they can't afford to lose on a investment that might not work out into their advantage.
