Depressant

Sedative-hypnotics (Benzodiazepines)

Date Rape Drug - rohypnol is known as "the date rape drug". The reason why is because it is colorless, odorless, and can easily be slipped into someones drink. This may cause the person to feel an increase in the effects of the alcohol their drinking. Also, the drug will cause the victim to have a loss of will and a weakness in strength, which is why it is so appealing to rapists.

Schedule IV Drug, meaning that; it has a low potential for abuse relative to other (lower schedule) drugs, "the drug is accepted for medical use in the United States", and that the physical dependence it will lead to will be small compared to other drugs. The reason rohypnol is a higher schedule drug is because it was grouped with other benzodiazepines. However, rohypnol does not completely fit this category, as it is illegal in the United States. According to the DEA, the penalties for possessing, trafficking, or distributing rohypnol is the same as those of Schedule I Drugs.

Rohypnol is a central nervous system depressant, which means it slows the activity of the central nervous system. Additionally, it also slows brain function. Rohypnol comes in the form of small pills, usually sealed off like any over-the-counter drugs would seem. The most common ways to take rohypnol are by swallowing the pills, or by dissolving them in a drink. However, it may also be injected (like heroin), and snorted (like cocaine). Furthermore, rohypnol can come in 0.5, 1, or 2 mg doses. A picture of rohypnol pills are provided below:

There are many reasons as to why someone may decide to consume rohypnol. Heroin addicts, for example, may use rohypnol with the intention of enhancing their heroin high. Cocaine addicts may use rohypnol too, for the purpose of calming the high that the cocaine has given them. Some people may even use the drug because it "cures" hangovers. Lastly, some people may just consume it because it gives them a relaxed feeling, and reduces anxiety.

Rohypnol is legally prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders in many parts of the world, including Mexico, South America, Asia, and Europe. Moreover, when used as prescribed, there are studies that display that rohypnol does effectively increase the total time spent sleeping. An additional legal use of rohypnol is that it may be used before surgeries, as it lowers blood pressure, which reduces bleeding. However, despite these legal uses in other parts of the world, it is not approved for medical use in the United States.

Teenagers are considered the primary abusers of Rohypnol. In fact, according to the ONDCP, a few established drug dealers even seek out school-aged children to sell rohypnol pills to, in the hope that the children will sell it to their friends, making the drug dealer a lot of money. As a consequence of these drug dealers, rohypnol is very easily accessible and cheap, which is a big reason why it is very popular within teens.

According to the 2016 "Monitoring the Future" survey, rohypnol use in US Adolescents has increased by 0.1% since 2015. This was a small, insignificant increase, but nevertheless we should be careful. If rohypnol does start to increase in teens by larger amounts, it can be detrimental to the health of the upcoming generations.

In the 1950s, the Swiss pharmaceutical company Hoffman-La Roche developed and created the first benzodiazepines. Following this creation, small modifications were made to this simple model of the benzodiazepine, which introduced many other drugs/tranquilizers, such as Rohypnol in 1970. Later on in 1975, rohypnol was sold for the first time in Switzerland, for the purpose helping patients with insomnia. As time went on, rohypnol began to get more and more popular. It had an abrupt increase in use in the early to mid 1990s, as high school and college kids began to abuse it at clubs and parties. Though, in 1997, rohypnol became officially banned from the United States, and the punishments for possessing it also became very serious.

Misconceptions

There are many misconceptions surrounding the use of rohypnol. One of these misconceptions is that the drug is not harmful. Many people believe that rohypnol is not harmful or addictive, since it is legal and prescribed in other countries. However, this is a fallacious assumption, as one can in fact become physically dependent on rohypnol in about 10 days of repeated use. Furthermore, when one is addicted to this drug, it is hard to get off it, as the withdrawal symptoms are harsh. An additional misconception that many people have about rohypnol is that it is undetected on urinalysis. This is, once again, an erroneous belief, since in multiple states drug tests for rohypnol are available and used, as it is noticeable in urine for up to 72 hours.
