There are four components used to score. The nurses and doctors look at the child's heart rate. The heart rate should beat 100-140 beats per minute. The respiratory effort should be good. The baby should be crying and breathing normally. The muscle tone should be active and they baby should show strong motions.

This section brought back memories for me. My daughter was born at 32 weeks. She was three pounds. She is eleven years old now. I am not sure what her score was but I am eager to find out. I am sure they gave me the information then, but I was just focused on her being able to start sucking from the bottle, and for her heart rate to be on track. She had issues with her heart rate and came home with a heart monitor. We used it for a couple of months and then she was good to go! I will definitely look through my keepsakes for all of her information. During her stay in the NICU there was a baby that was born at 24 weeks, and she did not make it. That broke my heart. I attended the memorial service to give her parents some support. It is a small world I ran met another couple who went to church with them and they said that they adopted a baby girl after their daughter passed! I plan on having another child hopefully in the near future. I will make sure I pay close attention as to what the APGAR test will be!
