The United States was looking to expand their territory. They were enclosed by the Atlantic Ocean from the East, Canada from the North, and Mexico from the South. We then made the decision to avoid wars and controversy and just purchase the louisiana territory which about doubled the size of the US. We purchased it from Napoleon of France on April 30th, 1803 for a total of $15,000,000.

Thomas Jefferson (who was the president at the time) was the one who finalized and initiated the purchase. This was purchased from Napoleon who was the ruler of France at the time. But everyone seems to forget about the Native Americans and how they were forced out by the Americans. The Native Americans had to move even further West and a lot of them died in that movement from either the illnesses and diseases or the Americans would kill them.

This excerpt was written in 1803 and it was written by an unspecified government worker. This is basically just a review of the louisiana purchase and why the US did it. The document doesn’t say anything that’s negative because they were oblivious to how this affected other people such as the Native Americans. They had no clue that they were ruining the homes of many families and tribes and forcing them to all move out and make room for the Americans. This document is important because it shows us that not only was the American people unaware, but the Government was also unaware.

The Liberty of Congress.

“A Century of Lawmaking.” A Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation, memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=llsl&fileName=008%2Fllsl008.db&rec%2BNum=213.

With the lyric “and crown thy good with brotherhood” from America the beautiful this doesn’t cleary state anything about the Louisiana purchase. The next line is the line that best represents the purchase. The line goes, “from sea to shining sea” which is ment to show that they have expanded all the way west and the people of their nation (US) now has the freedom of much much more land. The line, “and crown thy good with brotherhood” to me means that is the way that they want society to feel or they already feel that way.
