By Walt Whitman, a famously known American poet and philosopher, initially grasped my attention with its critically descriptive language, such as “foolish”, “sordid”, and “faithless”. As the poem went on, I was captivated by the underlying message held within the poem: Waltman’s crippling questions regarding his existence in a confusing yet inspiring world. Similarly, the film Dead Poets Society truly enlightened my view of the world and caused me to seek adventure, fulfillment, and simplistic happiness within life. I enormously enjoyed the film’s journey through the characters’ lives, relationship with their teacher Mr. Keating, and their reactions toward unfair resolutions, and ultimately death.

This image represents one of my favorite memories as it describes a time where I felt completely relaxed and entirely “in the moment”. I thoroughly enjoyed connecting with the simple and tranquil effects of nature as we created original artwork, which is one of my favorite hobbies. I also thoroughly enjoyed this activity which directly relates to the tenets of transcendentalism (nature and simplicity) due to the ability to spend quality time with my friends along with nature, away from societal judgments or pressures.

During this specific day, I had spent a relaxing day in the sun with my cousins while a ladybug landed on our arms and decided to join our day of relaxation. While I admired this ladybug as it walked across my skin, I became apparently aware of its beauty and complex appearance. I had never before taken such a close interest and infatuation in such a small creature and part of nature before, but on this specific day, I became aware of nature’s complex beauty and infatuations which I had never paid much attention towards.

While reading one of the books that completely changed my perspective on life When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanathi, which explores the journey of a talented surgeon and his battle with a vigorous and fatal disease, I decided to spend some time in the fresh air observing and taking in the peace of nature. As I surrounded myself with the tranquil effects of nature in combination with this perspective-altering piece of literature, I felt completely at peace and connected with the world. After this specific day, I started to spend more and more hours surrounding myself with nature and connecting to the transcendentalist aspects of the world due to my realization of its positive effects.

We spent the night with the wind in our faces and the smell of nature surrounding our bodies as we drove through neighborhoods in a golf cart. This experience eventually led us to sit on a golf course while dancing and laughing while watching the sunset behind us. This experience helped me realize that nature can provide one of the most gratifying and memorable experiences simply because of its beauty and stillness.
