During the turn of the century the US was more of a bully than a leader. They were a bully when they went into war for the Philippines and wouldn't give them independence for years. They also acted like a bully when they supported Panama financially and with a naval blockade for their revolution when Columbia refused to do the Panama Canal. The US were bullies when they took control of Hawaii because they staged a revolt, created a new government, and demanded annexation. The US also acted like bullies when they went to Guam to go to war, and when they weren't prepared they gave them 30 minutes to surrender. Though there were times they did nothing wrong like buying Alaska, and gaining Puerto Rico. I think overall the US was more of a bully in the turn of the century.
