A major aspect of special education is behaviors. Teaching and learning through the disruptive behaviors, replacing negative behaviors, feeling the brunt of aggressive behaviors. Being around behaviors all day and handling behaviors all day tires teachers out. They often can start to feel burnt out and sometimes even like they are receiving no help.

A reason teachers feel like they are getting no help is often due to how long it takes to get help. Teachers need 6-8 weeks of behavior data before they can begin to get serious help with behaviors and trying to mange the behaviors.

When a student is first observed displaying a behavior one step would be to implement a positive support plan. Students are able to learn basic behavior expectations and small tokens are used to recognize student’s positive behaviors. . For a system created to decrease negative behaviors and increase positive behaviors, there are aspects that may create more negative behaviors in students.

Functional Behavior Assessment

A BIP includes a goal, information on why the behavior is happening, what the team wants to replace the behavior with, how the team is going to teach the replacement behavior, and how the environment may change to support the plan. Before a BIP may be put into place a functional behavior assessment must take place. This process can be very stressful and lengthy. The FBA gives in depth information about the child and the behavior such as triggers for the behavior, frequency, and intensity. In order to get an FBA, you must first hold an IEP meeting to get consent for the FBA. Once you have consent you will need six to eight weeks to collect data.

While behavior intervention plans can be successful, they are difficult to manage due to the ever-changing behaviors. The BIP may have been written about one behavior, for example, student shows environmental aggression when provided with a non-preferred task. The strategies in the BIP may decrease the physical aggression but the child could decide that since their old behaviors are not working, they try something else.

First Then Board

A first then board may be a strategy you can put into place for students. Some students get anxious, and this may cause a negative behavior, when they do not know what is coming next. With a first then board they know exactly what is after their current activity. This may be your schedule or it may be used for breaks as well. Having first 'work' then 'break' or a picture of a preferred item allows students to understand they get a break after their work.

A token board is often used with children who have behaviors. This is a strategy that needs to be slowly introduced to the student. When it is first introduced the student should only have to earn one star and then immediately earn their reward. You can increase the tokens needed for their reward as the student starts to understand that when they earn enough tokens they earn a reward.
When I use token boards I often refer back to it until the student earns the reward. After they get a reward we count the rewards that we have earned and determine how many we have left until we get a reward.

A BCBA is someone who may work in the school system to help mange and handle behaviors. When there is a call for support during a child's escalation the BCBA will often respond to the call. The BCBA also spends some time with the children to get to know them so that when it comes to writing plans such as BIPs or PSPs they know what sort of strategies would work with the students. They are also a good resource for teachers on different strategies that can be used on the everyday basis.

Behavior techs are people who work below the BCBA. The BCBA may not be able to answer every crisis call so the BT is the backup. The BT can also take students who need breaks or can take an escalated child away from the situation and deescalate the students.
