In the TED Talk "How our friendship survives our political opposition" by Caitlin Quattromanni and Lauren Arledge the idea to approach dialogue over debate is an idea worth listening to in 2018. In the last 3 years politics seems to surround everyday life, from the morning news to rap lyrics. For this reason, political opinion is strong among the citizens of the United States. Though the issue where people are afraid to express their opinions is a obstacle people should not worry about. With that said, the speakers address a great way to approach the problem. That is the idea of dialogue over debate. Instead of trying to find every weakness and limitation in a argument, approach the conversation with an open mind and a chance to learn something new. For instance, Lauren comments "we might learn something new from ourselves, and our country". This quote resonates with me because I noticed people with completely different sides in politics completely shut down ideas so quickly that they never had a chance to hear what the other person had to say. As Americans, if we cannot communicate with each other, how do we expect our president, the senators, and our mayors to meet our expectations if we cannot find common ground within our community. In the end, the change in conversation might even change the way you look at a problematic situation in the hopes of finding common ground.

Law enforcement encounters

In the article "What To Do When Encountering Law Enforcement" by the American Civil Liberties Union, we explore the basic rights each individual has if encountered by Police. Two of the most useful pieces of information that I got from the article were the basic rights we can execute. For instance, an individual doesn't need to sign or answer any questions from the police officer. Coupled with the statement "I do not consent to a search" where the police officer will need "reasonable suspicion" or warrant to search you or a car. The color of your skin, car, or cloths are not reasons be searched. With that said, I think this is incredibly important for teenagers since we don't tend to know the rights we are granted. Similarly, law enforcement can be intimidating to a 17 year old so if students are taught to remain calm and to be aware of their rights, any unnecessary searches and problems can be avoided.

Based on my political beliefs I am a liberal opportunist. For instance, I believe the people should be granted the same protection by the government regardless of their position. With that said I think that the government should serve the public, this includes poor, rich and others who need support for food, healthcare and housing. Similarly, the government should continue to seek for progressive values in order to help people live better lives.

In 1989, China struggles to fight for democracy. In Tiananmen Square, Beiging. A man carrying grocery bags stands in front of anti democracy tank protesters. Although they attempt to maneuver around him, he stands his ground and stops them from suppressing the voice of Chinese citizens. To this day the Chinese government is under totalitarian rule and those who protest or speak out against the government face violence, prison, or are never heard from again. This picture resonates with me because the person in the photo is clearly an older person, this means that they are aware of the risk and problems they he will face shortly after. Although this may be true, the individual is showing a selfless act by setting a foundation for the democratic activists to contest the totalitarian government. To this day, the Chinese government has not disclosed what has happened to the "tank man", it is unknown if they are a prisoner or if they were given the death sentence immediately after the iconic event.

Malala Yousafzai is a women's educational activist who received a Nobel Peace Prize at 17 years old after surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban. Ever since Malala was a child, she was an advocate for education; consequently, she received death by the Taliban shortly after disclosing her protest. In 2013, nine months after she was shot, Malala gave a speech at the United Nations highlighting the importance of education and women's rights. She urges that world leaders change their policies to discard patriarchal ideologies. This sis significant because students and parents around the globe are reminded that something as simple as education is a life threatening in some areas of the the world. This can spark change in the Education Administration to advocate in helping students who struggle to obtain k-12 education. I am not suggesting that students should put their lives on the line to make a change in our communities but I am suggesting that who have the resources and help to aid people in need, we must take initiative. When Malala comments "The extremest were, and they are, afraid of books and pens. The power of education frightens them", this is a clear example of changes students can make in the community, and if we try hard enough we can make it worldwide.

If I were to vote, I would lean towards the democratic party. After taking the political party quiz, I realized that I have liberal motives with minor conservative beliefs as well. For example, I believe that everybody has the capacity to achieve anything they put work in. I also believe that everyone should have the same rights under the United States Constitution. Finally, I would most likely vote for a democratic president in the next presidential election bases on the performance and vision for the country.
