"over half of Americans under the age of 30 said they rarely followed politics, compared to less than a quarter of those over the age of 65" (pg. 4)

This is a monumental number for a country that contains more than 300 million people. Also, as the cycle of life continues, the youth of today will become the leaders of the country and with this apathy continuing, what will that look like?

"The cause of young people's political apathy probably runs deeper. A broader reason is that today's young adults have grown up in an environment in which news about political events has been increasingly more avoidable and less shared than in the past" (pg 6)

Switching the channel is far more tempting than watching a political debate. Going on twitter sounds more interesting than reading up on the candidates for next electoral season. Watching Youtube sounds more fun than watching laws get passed in Congress. It is so easy for anyone these days to avoid the present issues and governmental changes, because there is so much other content to consume. Thus, this is causing the youth of this time to be able to scoot around the thing they aren't particularly interested in seeing, and causing a general apathy in today's younger generations.

"In sum, young people today have never known a time when most ctitizens paid attention to major political events. As a result, most of them have yet to get into the habit of following and participating in politics" (pg 7)

Because the youth of today have not experienced a culture where being politically aware is the norm, it is inevitable that they would develop apathy. In the same way, if they had been raised during a world war or a time of great national turmoil, there would be a different response. however, there are always life-changing bills and laws coming into play, but the idea that there are so many other things to check that are far "more interesting" per say, could retract from the interest in politics.
