EX-MO

I grew up Mormon but left the church in my early 20s. I had to figure out how to interact with others in a way that was respectful of their beliefs while honoring my authenticity. I felt pretty ostracized when I lived in Utah County during that time. Salt Lake City has a strong “Ex-Mo” scene.

I tried coffee and alcohol a lot later than other non-religious people. I became interested in scientific explanations about the history of our earth as well as American history, and reformulated my previous beliefs.

Another cultural thing about being an ex-mormon is talking to other ex-Mos about their faith transition, faith crises and religious based trauma.

HARPIST

My favorite harp joke I’ve heard is that harpists spend 80% of their time tuning, and the remainder playing out of tune.

Another shared culture among harpists is the burden of moving your instrument. It took me more than a decade to figure out how to transport my harp efficiently. And it still makes me incredibly nervous.

I used to perform often at weddings and quickly got used to all of the same comments and questions. Every old guy would come up and make the same joke - that he must have died and gone to heaven.

Harpists also have a bad rep in the music world. I never played at a professional level, but I’ve had other professional musicians tell me their personal gripes about the instrument itself. For example, iit is very tricky to compose harp music or they complain that harpists do not keep in time with the rest of the orchestra.

I love reading. I frequent libraries and bookstores. My favorite library is the Sprauge branch in Sugarhouse, and I absolutely love King’s English Bookstore.

I watch book reviews through YouTube to determine my to-read list.

I’ve attended a lot of author events and have several books signed by the author. Being a bookworm also means being a wanna-be-writer.

Whenever I go to someone's house I look at their bookshelf and JUDGE them on their reading choices.

& I love Goodreads! It is the only social media platform that doesn’t give me total anxiety, because it’s all about books.

My photo album is overflowing and pretty much only consists of my two cats Edward and Margo. I think every little thing they do is so CUTE and I talk about them all of the time.

Although I don’t use the phrase fur-baby. They are treated as part of the family.

When my husband and I play board games, they play with us (and usually win).

I give them Tarot readings, and they have their own shelf in our pantry for their kitty treats.

At Christmas time they each have their own stocking. And of course I find every cat meme hilarious.

MILLENNIAL

I was born in 1988 so all things ‘90s are especially nostalgic. (AKA, American Girl Dolls, Shark-Bite fruit snacks, Nickelodeon, and Sam Goody stores).

Something that makes me culturally Millennial is that my husband and I both work full time, we both take care of the cooking, cleaning and yard work equally. We do not follow the gender norms of the boomer generation.

I haven’t had a streamlined career, but rather a lot of little jobs. And I am sensitive to toxic workplaces. I want to work in a job that is meaningful.

I also… Doordash! And I always tip 20% when we go out to eat.
