Mrs. Mallard was devastated when she heard that her husband was killed in a railroad disaster. For awhile, Mrs. Mallard was grieving and wished to be left alone, but soon she came to a realization. She had realized that she was free from her marriage, which had been controlling and left her feeling powerless. She was filled with joy, imagining the many years of freedom to come. Soon after recieving the news, her husband showed up at the front door, as if nothing had happened. Mrs. Mallard realized he hadn't died and her independence was gone, and because she suffered frim heart problems, the overwhelming disapointment was too much and she had a heart attack.
