The parent, teacher, or school administrator can initiate the process to determine if a child needs special education services through a written referral.

Step 2:

With your signed consent, assessments will be done to assess your child’s disability. Testing helps the IEP team decide if your child needs special education services.

Assessments will cover all areas connected to the disability (health, communication, social/emotional, and behavior to name a few)

Step 3:

This meeting MUST be held within 60 days of your consent to test. During this meeting the IEP team will decide if your child has a disability that requires special education services.

You will receive a written invitation to this meeting, respond as soon as possible!

Step 4:

Within 30 days of the Initial Evaluation meeting the team develops a program based on your child’s needs. YOU are an essential part of this process. The IEP is a written document that describes your child’s accommodations, goals and objectives, services and modifications needed to access an appropriate education.

Your child should receive services indicated on the IEP as soon as possible after the IEP meeting.

Step 6:

You will receive quarterly updates on your child’s progress towards their IEP goals and objectives. Think of this as an “IEP Report Card”.
